Revcounter not working after new built

Post by KamikaziCaddy »

Hi Guys

I’ve been building the past 16monthe on my Caddy project, 1989 model with a 2E longblock motor fuel injected, started with the MP9 but pulled it out Saturday and fitted a Dicktator STD, but since day 1 the revcounter dont work, I’ve got a 3 pin coil.

I used the enjin loom of a 1991 Citi for the front from the fuse box, I did cut out the TP100 wires but left the red wire with a black tracer aka revcounter ?. So when I connect the bluewire with black tracer from the dicktator to the red wire with black tracer my revcounter still dont work, i disconnected the wire and sometimes when I swing the enjin the revcounter jumps and stop again.

Any suggestions what I can look at next ?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The blue/black wire from Dicktator is the correct wire on Dicktator side.

The red/black wire is the wrong wire. Back trace from your rev counter side to the plug connecting to the cluster the wire and then find the colour wire.

Red black is traditionally the correct rev counter wire. But it needs coil negative for ththe old clusters ie something in the vicinity of 220 v not the 5v the dictator puts out.
When you use a 3 pin coil thee is a little plastic above the big connector and there are two terminals sitting there. The one side is 12v and the other is the coil negative. You can connect it there.

Thanks Stephan, I did do that and it picks up when I rev it, but on idling it just stays on 0, but once I rev it over 3000rpm the buzzer comes on.

Sorted out the buzzer now, but revcounter only work when I rev it and not on idling, it just picks up from 0 barely and stays there. Any advice ?

But on that 2 connecters above the 3pin plug the revcounter works on the positive only.

I believe you require a tacho adapter for it to work. I had one fitted to my 60-2 setup as the signal from the ecu is square and not sinusodal

on the old counters it's all about voltage.. 5 v just don't do it.

In your first post you mentioned TP100 and cut out wires, meaning the distributor signal as this is now going through the Dicktator std. You are still using the TP100. Connect a wire between pin 7 on the TP100 and your rev counter black/red wire and you are sorted. Then you have a 12V signal to rev counter.
