mk1 1.8 Idling hunting?

Post by ErnestVW »

Hi Guys

I have a problem with my 2007 golf mk1 1.8 idling unevenly.

I set the timing and it will idle on TDC for a few sec's and then drop down a few degrees only to pick up over TDC again and so on.
What could be the issue?
Could it be the earth on the dizzy module? ( This is advise I just got from a rando)
If not can you guide me in the right direction to start fault finding?
Let me know if you need any more information.

Yes it is carb. And I did change the motor from the original 1.4 to an 1.8. It has the newer dash without all the silver trim.

Check that the vacuum advance diagrams and pipes are all still working and are not cracked.

Check for vacuum leaks on intake system and condition of rubber between carb and intake manifold.

I know that I replaced the entire flange and gasket on the carb recently but I will check for leaks as you recommended and give feedback as soon as I can.
Can you make any suggestions on what I need to change on my carb (if necessary) considering I moved the carb straight from the old 1.4 motor to the 'new' 1.8.?

Timing should not be set to tdc anyway. It should be set to 6 degrees advanced. Explain your method of checking. Ie with a light that has an advance feature or what do you have the timing set to. I am assuming you are talking about ignition timing either way.
