Lifespan of control arm bushings

Post by Reegz »

Folks, what's the "average" life-span of control arm bushings?
The Golf went it for service and needed these changed. The car has 47k on the clock and is just over 6 years old.

Is this considered normal? I mentioned this to a buddy and he said that this is a fault(?) and should be covered by VWSA. Is there any merit to this?

I don't think there really is an average when it comes to control arm bushings. There are a lot of factors to take into account like, roads, driving style etc. that can cause premature wear of the bushings. Remember that low mileage does not always equal trouble free motoring especially with modern vehicles. 6 years is a long time and you can expect these types of parts to require replacing.

On polo 9n average lifespan was a year. On some cars much longer. But yes they can be finished at those low km.

Thanks chaps.

I wasn't at first particularly alarmed by the need to change em considering that I had a blow out on the front tyre and that I've hit one or two of Sandton's finest craters on the way to work.

However, my buddy instilled the fear of school fees in me when I mentioned it to him so I thought it best to check with ye learned folks.

Also remember lifespan can be measured in km's and (or) years. So you might have low mileage, but many years. Same as high mileage but little years. In your case, car is 6 years old. Max warranty in with VW would have been 5yrs (assuming actual warranty claim)
