From what I have read and seen its easier to do a roll-cage. The prep work involved to do all the seam welds are a massive pain in the a$$.

I agree. Read alot on the UK mk1 forum where they struggle with all the sealant used in between the seams. It really messes up welding and the amount of bolt in cages available makes it easier to go that route.

LOL  My thinking was, I can't remember that any of the Challenge or Superhatch guys seam weld their race car shells? Or are they seam welded if bought from VW Motorsport?

Most of those who did seam weld did it when body with cage was received from VW Racing (only the proper hardcore racers did this, most of us just used a cage). I think some of the factory rally cars were seam welded by VW Racing......

Cool, that is what I thought, not a necessity even for those racing.

Yea there's only a few race cars seam welded, Motorsport never did it because it's a PIA, Graham Savage Mk1 was seam welded Blueblob/Rinus has it now and it handles quite a bit better then a none seam welded chassis, although in a Mk1 anything to make it structurally stronger will make it better.

Process is simple strip everything out, 1inch weld length on every seam every 3-5 inches, full respray and be happy.
