Fan not working

Post by Krace »

Hi All,

I've search the site(trying to avoid repetition) and though some guys have similar problems, my exact problem wasn't noted, hence posting this. Apologies if this problem was already dealt with. So i'll be brief.

Car: Golf Mk3 GSX 1.8i (with air con - double fan)
Parts changed: Fuse 19 (30A) intact, Relay Fuse intact, Fan switch(November 2017)
Problem: Fan not working
Temp climbs during traffic, sits for a few minutes at the halfway(temp gauge) mark, but then climbs past and overheats. Once through traffic and driving freely, temp drops significantly to below halfway (probably the wind turning the fans).
My theory: Thermostat is probably working (hence the pause by halfway), but when the fans (low and high speed) should start working, it is not, so temp climbs beyond that point.

Question: its a 3 pin fan switch. if I bridge points, with the ignition on, should the fan go on? if it doesn't go on, does that mean I have a faulty fan switch?

If you bridge the points yes the fan should run. If they don't then the fan relay box or the fans themslves have given up the ghost.
It's usally relay box. Sits under the water expansion bottle on the left side of the engine bay.

Thank you Panic-Mechanic.
I'll replace the fan relay box then report back.
Called a few places now, not actually that easy to find. Will have to go in with a sample apparently (? pins).
Quoted R90 - R120.

Nope I called Suburban Spares and got a quote from them. If that's the price then they possibly quoted me on the wrong part.
