mk1 brake upgrade
hi all need advice on the following:
would like to upgrade discs for my citi golf as i like to believe a car must have good stopping power to get you out of sticky situations when the need arises i think the std disc size is 239mm i would like to uprgrade to a 256mm found in the mk2 golf gti will it fit directly without havin to modify anything? will i notice a difference in braking? also i saw powerbrake has the carbon slotted rs dics available are these anygood has anyone bought them yet?

Re: mk1 brake upgrade
Cant comment on the mk2 disks and powerbrake items but I do know Goldwagen Delarey sells a kit that use the original caliper. With the kit you can fit polo cup disks which is 280- something millimetres. Think they use it on some of their cars. They are one of the advertisers on the forum and their work is top quality.

Re: mk1 brake upgrade
I've always upgraded my Citi and MK1 brakes to 256mm in the front, it makes a huge difference. Your brakes will be much more responsive and you'll need less pressure on the pedal to brake.
You need a bracket made up to move the stock calipers out to accommodate the larger disks. I went to Norbrake and they did some small modifications to the wheel hub to take their brackets.
On my Mk1 I'm also fitting braided steel hydraulic brake lines which will further improve the overall braking:
This will basically keep braking pressure consistent each time I hit the pedal.
I've also put in a 22mm booster and a slightly bigger master cylinder.

No thanks, kind of scary blasting through a red light when your 'bicycle brakes' fail Fitted the newer CITI calipers and vented disc when I got home. Still want to beef them up, want to follow EX-DOHCTOR's example... but daily needs fixing first

Re: mk1 brake upgrade
Brakes failing has little to do with their size, my MkI brakes do their job well enough and I don't push them past what I believe they are capable of.RedBeard wrote:Neuk wrote:Pfft, pansies, still using the old square pad and 239mm disc setup in my MkI

True.. think it was a issue of age on mine, that week i had to redo front and back brakes because of all the old rubber bits, i always believe i might as well upgrade while replacing.

Re: mk1 brake upgrade
I'll try and keep my MkI as original as possible for as long as possible but understand that I don't drive her anywhere near as often as others drive their MkI's or Citi's so upgrading things like brakes are just not a priority for me.RedBeard wrote:Neuk wrote:Brakes failing has little to do with their size, my MkI brakes do their job well enough and I don't push them past what I believe they are capable of.RedBeard wrote:Neuk wrote:Pfft, pansies, still using the old square pad and 239mm disc setup in my MkI

Re: mk1 brake upgrade
Neuk you can keep your car original, always like seeing the older cars in original glory. There is more than enough modified ones out there, some good and some... not so much.
