Fuel Brands
Hi Guys
Just thought his would be an interesting thing to sort of research. I know everyone has their own particular preference when it comes to filling up at the pumps and then some not.
I myself have been using Shell 95 Unleaded for years just because of convenience and then brand loyalty (Because Ferrari lol) and now the added benefit of getting Click's points.
I know each brand brings its own additives and stuffs into the mix but I would like to know based on 95 octane fuel and regardless of what you drive, what brand of fuel do you prefer that is available on the SA market?

Re: Fuel Brands
Shell due to convenience more than anything else as there is a Shell close to where we currently stay and on the way to work and from work going to training in the afternoon. I have never found major differences between the different fuel brands despite them all having their own additives promising this and that but I know others have found some differences.

Engen for me!
tried BP and Shell
by using the same road and the same amount of fuel
Engen gave me at atleast 20-30km more than the BP or Shell
also power wise car felt a bit more happy

Re: Fuel Brands
I fill with Sasol mainly because I get ABSA rewards everytime I fill up. Shell occasionally, for some reason the Shell-V Power makes the car feel more nippy...lol, it's probably all in my head tho

Diesel in Africa guys...
At first I questioned the need for this thread but it all makes sense now... you guys are slow, you need whatever you can get out of these fuels!!

Re: Fuel Brands
Sasol,
Because it's in the estate where I live and its less of a risk getting jacked while I'm waiting for fuel to be filled. I've used everything and never felt a difference. However, I wish FNB can strike some deal with SASOL. Im losing out on ebucks

Re: Fuel Brands
well i have wondered too what difference is there
BUT i use 93
It will help with extra kilos per tank. I have to remember where i fill and check I drive a yaris sedan 1.3 on a 40 45l tank i get around 600kms in town i normally drive about 50kms when the last bar is flashing. I dont know if this is in the reserve or not . should it go away first before its in reserve.
NOt sure maybe yaris drivers can highlight me here as im too scared i get stuck. I might get more out of my tank .
I Think 1 brand gave me more kilos but now i will definitely have to do a test and right it down . coz during work conditions i normally drive that tank in 2 to 3 weeks done thats why i never remember where i filled.
Also guys espescially on fuel will it not be beneficial to our economy if we stayed true to SA brands?
I think SASOL is a SA brand ?
BP Brittish
Shell NOt sure Europe?
Total? USA Brand or Europe?
Just a thought
Cheers

I also use Sasol and only Sasol. When I throw 95 in elsewhere the car feels sluggish?Irfaan wrote:Sasol,

Re: Fuel Brands
I thought Yaris' needed 95? Sure, it's not the latest FSI type engine but it's a lot more modern than say a CitiGolf engine.Rourke wrote:BUT i use 93
Sasol is South African, BP is British, Shell is British-Dutch, Total is French, Caltex is American, etc. Depending on where you live, base fuel from just about any of the major garages is supplied by a single source. For instance, in Gauteng, all base fuel is supplied by Sasol either from Sasolburg or Secunda and sometimes via Durban if local manufacturing ability can't meet demand.Rourke wrote:I think SASOL is a SA brand ?

Re: Fuel Brands
Which fuel has the highest ethanol content?
That would make the most difference to performance for the newer VW Turbo Charged engines.

Re: Fuel Brands
I have the following the garages close by shell,Engen and sasol.
Sasol :seems to run out the quickest giving me the least amount of kms (petrol and diesel 50ppm)
Shell : the petrol is okay however the diesel seems to just disappear
Engen: I get the best range/km per tank with them on both diesel and petrol, the other good thing is the engen near me does something called the happy hour on a Sunday which means you get a 60c per litre discount on diesel

They should all be the same, there is a specification for all base fuel manufactured or brought in to SA.madracer21 wrote:Which fuel has the highest ethanol content?

Re: Fuel Brands
They should be, but is adding more ethanol to the base more cost effective?Neuk wrote:They should all be the same, there is a specification for all base fuel manufactured or brought in to SA.madracer21 wrote:Which fuel has the highest ethanol content?
If it is, then fuel companies will definately try to maximise the ethanol content. Think the general % is about 10%.
The government is getting all excited with this climate change and emissions tax. They should push the fuel guys to start offering E85.

Re: Fuel Brands
I am sure it is effective but whether a fuel company is keen to add more cost to fuel for a few customers interested in octane rating or whether they are allowed to add an additive that effectively changes the octane rating of a fuel, I can't answer.madracer21 wrote:They should be, but is adding more ethanol to the base more cost effective?Neuk wrote:They should all be the same, there is a specification for all base fuel manufactured or brought in to SA.madracer21 wrote:Which fuel has the highest ethanol content?

As for E85, as long as government has a choke hold on the fuel industry, I don't see it happening. There are a few guys making their own biodiesel though but it is illegal to sell it from what I know.

Re: Fuel Brands
Usually fill up 95% of the time with Shell as it is close to work or on my way to work as i get clicks points plus the car is more happier and the lest few tank i have been getting my best fuel consumption.
2nd option is Engen as it is closer to home, they have/ had Edgars swipe points running as well and the other day after feeling up. I got a free buddy cold drink.
Total- i got the worst consumption ever and car was very sluggish.
