mk1 golf leaking carb

Post by chico16 »

I have a 2001 1.6 citi chico mk1 golf. I noticed smoke coming from under the bonnet. I noticed that the carb was leaking onto inlet manifold and dripping onto exhaust. I can see where it is coming from- against the carb housing at front looks like a brass ball sticking out, thats where its leaking. I dont want to drive like that, in case it catches fire. Can someone please give me some advice on how to go about to repair it?
Thanks.

Buy a crb overhaul kit, take ot apart, change the seals and gaskets. Put it back together.

Those small balls are pressed / peined into the bores that run inside the housing, to seal them. IMHO replacing the seals and gaskets will not fix this problem.

I had a similar problem on my Keihin many moons ago: the one ball seal squirted petrol every time I pressed the accelerator pump, and I actually managed to seal that area by degreasing it properly and covering it with Pratley steel.

Go to scrap yard and get a carb. Overhaul it and put it in the car.

Thank you all for your input. I managed to seal it with abro putty which is chemical resistant. The car starts easier now also, previously the carb would drain cos of the leak, making it take longer to start as it first has to fill carb again. Thanks.
