Gearbox Replacement/Repair

Post by Spelwan88 »

Hi Guys

So this past weekend I had a gearbox seal replacement on the pushrod and the main seal but when I was draining the oil I had the lovely surprise of finding ball bearings fall out.

I drive a 1991 VW Caddy 1.8 Sport (Carb). I know it uses an 020 gearbox but not sure what derivative of it.

1. Should I have the gearbox repaired and any suggestions on good places with reasonable prices in the JHB area?

Or Alternatively:

2. What gearbox should I replace it with? (FFZ, AUG, etc.)

I have had mine serviced by Gearboxman, seals and bearings, they collect and deliver if the box is out.

Do you happen to have their contact details?

I'm trying to do feasibilty between replacing with an FFZ or reconditioning the gearbox. In your opinions which would be better?

Once upon a time Volkspares had the FFZ for 3.5 and the 1.6 sub assembly for 4.5 but the prices shot up the roof to 7k.

You can find the gearbox code on the bottom of bell housing on the flat part. It is stamped there.

Read this thread for more info regarding FFZ and DGG and other gearbox ratios.
