his is turning onto quite the debate.

Besides the estimated 12-15k to fix it properly , it can be added as a sidenote , that the towing and the storage( as this happnd on a saturday eve, and towing guys were closed on a sunday) was 5k.

Thus spending another 15 on top of my 5 , equals to the value of the car. Which then means ,Even if i fix it and sell it 100persent repaired , I break even.
That being said , if i it as is , for 5k , i also break even. just a lot less hassle.

panic-mechanic wrote:It's not corruption, it is business. They / us / whomever calls a car written off when the insurance pays you out for the vehicle and it becomes their property. That does not mean it cannot be repaired , it means it was not feasable for them to repair it. They can then sell this vehicle to somebody else and recover some of the cost. That person can fix it and put it back on the road. At no point there did it mean that it needed to be deregistered at natis which would trigger the code 3. There is nothing unethical or incorrect or corrupt about any of that. It does not by default mean that a accident damaged vehicle that was repaired and sold needs to carry a code 3 flag. HOW by whom and how well it gets repaired - now that is another story altogether and that is where the issue comes in, not the fact that it was sold by the insurance and remained code 2.
Report d stolen and recovered by th police will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS carry code 3 as that flags all kinds of stuff on natis and the stolen vehicle database. Hence the reason they get stamped by new numbers. If it was allowed to cary on or flags removed it means there was another loophole that could have been taken by thieves if the option existed to put it back.

Code 2 - Uneconomical to repair / Repair cost exceeds write-off threshold usually caused by high part prices / low value of vehicle.
Code 3 - Major Structural damages that cannot be repaired within manufacturer specification. Chassis frame / Unibody that cannot be pulled or aligned within specified tolerances.
Code 4 - Vehicle is f#*ked, cannot be used for anything... sometimes not even a few spares. Could also be a completely burnt vehicle / stolen and recovered car that was completely stripped. This vehicle cannot be re-registered so the tags cannot be moved onto another body and re-registered.

Code 2 Stolen and Recovered - Normal car that was stolen and recovered.
Code 2 Stolen and Recovered with AAPV numbers - The original vin tags on the vehicle were tampered with by the thieves therefore the vehicle needed to be stamped with a new vin no. at the police clearance stage.
Code 4 Stolen and Recovered - Stolen car completely stripped.

Im in the panel beating business for 13 years now with my dad. If its a 3rd party insurance claim the insurance will pay you the cheapest quoted amount into your account & you can than take tge vehicle in for repairs yourself or fix it yourself, thats how it works with 3rd party claims in Namibia. So like mentioned previously,do not tell the panel beaters its for insurance, other wise you going to get a much more inflated quote.

Also like mentioned, repairing that chassis leg would be more expensive than replacing. That chassis leg is also rather easy to replace, most of the work will be the removing of parts that may be in the way. What I would sugest,if the insurance pay you & not the panel beater or for some reason do not want to pay the total quoted amount is to do most of the work yourself. To replace the bonnet, fender, door etc yourself would save you alot of remove & fit of parts cost.

Yes the definitions are clear

Except the code 3 bit , (Permanantly unfit for use) This is very scary as there are many code 3 cars on the road and some are fit for use.

Like i said in a previous post , sometimes insurance will code a car code 3 when there is no damage or little damage to the car a light fender bashing or whatever.

This just makes no sense .

some code 2s are cars that have rolled and needs structural replacement of parts like roofs a pillars b pillers etc.

Its a real shame but its true these codes are bullS**t.

cheers

It is my understanding from a quick browse on the internet , That it is possible to purchase a whole inner which with the chassisleg already welded in.

If this is indeed the case , must this part be welded in by a professional autobody repeair specialist?

Correct,

Should the shock tower still be in line then pulling the panel straight is an option however note you'll get to 99% straight but that's behind the fender, so you wont see it.

Biggest worry would be the Shock tower , make sure it's straight otherwise you'll have endless alignment issues and a tyre running off unevenly.

Three arbitrary pieces of advice from me.

1) I haven't had much structural work done on my cars, and certainly no welding. But the one time that I had the front of my Fox repaired and "straightened" after a side impact, was not satisfactory at all, so based on that, I would actually warn you against that specific shop, namely Car Style Panelbeaters in Koedoespoort, Blesbok Ave.

2) The best work I've had thus far (pulling a badly dented rear valence on my Audi, sourcing used parts including boot lid, aligning panels and boot, priming and painting, still rust-free 13 years later - but no welding involved) was from Brooklyn Panelbeaters, also in Koedoespoort, Gemsbok Str. My contact was Vincent. But be warned, they are not cheap, and they don't like to argue.

3) For "budget jobs" that are done affordably but nevertheless with a reasonable amount of care, I always get a quote from Groenewald Panelbeaters in East Lynne, Dikkop Ave. Oom Hansie Groenewald has built up quite a workshop over the years, and he has a really good attitude.

Well Thank you Vagvan For that.

Ill Definitely have a look. I basically took the panel off , just so that I can steer the car , and perhaps tow it to the panel beater
