9n3 airbag connector on a Golf 5 airbag?

Post by herco »

Hi Guys!

I want to retrofit a golf 5 steering wheel in my 2007/08 polo 9n3.

I have a gti wheel and the airbag, but the connectors are different. What is my best course of action? Is it possible to change the connector on the Golf 5 airbag? Both of them has 4 wires. Guessing 2 is for hooter and 2 is for airbag detonation?

You won't find me being the oke that soldes there or does the mod. And if you do definitely change the plugbon the car side , not the airbag side.

Makes sense to rather change the receiving end on the car... Surely this mod must be possible though? The 4 wires on the one airbag will do what the 4 wires on the other does? I will try and get some wiring diagrams to be sure.

Yes your logic makes perfect sense. I Just don't have any inclination to get hit in the face with an airbag. I'm a total pissy that way.

I am so nervous every time I connect that airbag... I test the horn with a broom through the open window. When that airbag gets off the wheel, the room suddenly gets alot smaller.

Maybe I should live a few more years before attempting this... I'm waaaay too young to be taken out by a polo airbag.

Doesn't your polo airbag fit on GTI wheel?

I thought the G5 and 9n3 are the same?

I fitted a MK5 GTi Steering wheel on my old 2007 9n3 polo
I also fitted a Vivo GT steering to my 9n3
I now have a MK7 GTi steering in my MK6 Jetta

Each time was plug and play with all the buttons etc working...

That is what I expected. My polo is registered in 2007.

Airbag clips are different to the Golf MK5 wheels..
Airbag connectors are different, thus this thread.

Could I have a 2008 polo registered in 2007? Again though, should be the same since 07/08 are both 9n3...

Either way, I am sitting with this dilemma.

Have almost never felt the need to change a steering wheel. Only if tatty and then for the same one. For looks or whatever - only once in my life but that was a mk1 gti.

Its more a tactile thing for me. The cheap plastic feeling stock wheel is just not cutting it. A leather wrapped wheel with some more girth and supports feels a lot better. (insert girth joke here) Such as the GTi wheel, or my old BMW M Sport wheel. Makes the car feel alot more 'premium'.

oooooh, You have that shitty spongy type wheel, Not the leather wrapped wheel
So the shape and size of your airbag is slightly different. So wont fit on the GTI wheel

I've never seen the different plug, even the G6 used the same plug as the 9n polo/golf 5, are you sure that airbag is from a mk5?

Ok I am starting to understand the issue. I DON'T buy cars that I don't like or before I buy think Ok I will have to change this or that to like it it and keep it. If I would have to change the wheel to like it I would not have bought it in the first place.

Im sure the whole of any car modifying community would strongly disagree with you there. Luckily that is your subjective opinion and the way you do things.

A steering wheel is a very small part of a car, considering everything else. I would not let it be the difference between buying and not buying a car. Some of us see potential, and don't mind swopping/modding/breaking parts of a car to have it suit our needs and tastes

The only issue to understand here is the difference between the two connectors.

I don't think its about not liking the steering wheel, more that there is nicer/sportier options available.

I never bought my polo with the intention of changing the steering wheel, But I did...twice... because I could
Because the polo gti wheel was nicer than the stock one, And the golf GTi wheel was nicer than the pgti one. Doesn't mean there was anything wrong with any of them. Then again I did everything you hate to my polo :driving:
