Weber 40 DCOE - Help needed

Post by Ch®is »

I just installed twin 40's on my 1.8 8v citi golf sport. I had the carbs fitted and started them up fine with my standard ac fuel pump. On the open road test, the carbs failed to rev up freely and spluttered and was told I needed an electric facet pump which I got and installed. I again went for a road test and this time the car ran but still could not feel its full power. Just spluttered again and felt underpowered. Has anyone had this problem or know what it could be, ? The carbs were recently taken off from another golf and is in decent condition because when idling, it revs up beautifully and clean but the moment we get onto the road, its a different story.ImageImageImage

I just fitted 2 x dellorto DHLA's to a 1800 engine - still using the mechanical pump and it works 100%.

I am not a carb specialist - last time I did this was in 1990.

Points that I could remember from way back ( it took me a week to get it right ).

Double check timing
Make sure you have no air leaks on manifold or between carb and manifold ( sounds to me that you have a leak somewhere )
Make sure your pedal is adjusted that the butterflies in the carbs open all the way

If it idles good your balance setting between the 2 are not to bad - try and find someone to balance the 2 carbs for even better results.

Thanks for the reply, I too suspect there is an air leak. I hear a hissing sound but thought it was from the carbs.

I bought a set of soft mounts in Cape Town last week - it has an o ring both sides of the gasket and helps with vibration and sealing.

let me know if you need info on it.

Not knowing whether the carbs ran fine on the previous owners Golf, if it was running fine then yes a possible airleak. If it was the same issue as you have, it could be a blocked acceleration jet. Get some WD40 and spray at all the carb gaskets and where it mounts to the head.

Just some feedback, I went to Carburetor ace today and had the carbs tuned and the actual problem was my main jets were too small and were drilled 2 sizes bigger. After that. The car ran smooth and feels like it makes decent power. Thanks for your input guys

So this mean that main jets were too small and drilled out 2 sizes bigger. This might work, but remember these carbs use an emulsion tube jet, fuel jet, acceleration jet and air jet. you might be lucky that the increase in larger fuel jet solved this for you, but if you go and look on the Weber 40 DCOE info, you will see the correct sizing for you motor capacity.

I too was surprised as I knew the mains were enlargened and thought it was feeding way too much fuel for my head, bearing in mind its untouched apart for an Estas 276 cam
