Turbo oil drains

Post by Ashveer03 »

Howzit guys, has anybody made a hard line (steel piping) for a turbo drain without any sort of flex material? I want to know what are the chances of it cracking.

Thanks

Oh well thats a high chance.. lol.

I thought since the turbo and engine move together it wouldnt be a problem.. the rubber/braided part on the oem drains tends to kind of melt after time

Not just actual movement, it's vibration that kills it.

Alternative is always to buy an OEM part like from a TDI or gti and make a piece to join it to the turbo.

I went to a friends shop and got a piece of steel braided hydraulic pipe..

Just to check the difference, i cut of a small piece of the aftermarket pipe and stripped of the steel braiding, and did the same with a damaged tdi oem steel braided pipe..

Both have ribbed teflon inners, the oem pipe looks more like those plastic covers u get to cover wiring harnesses. The aftermarket 1 seems to be of better quality though, not sure if thats because the oem part was deteriorated. Will post a pic later

That ain't no drain pipe. That is a supply pipe. Are you sure you are talking about the right thing?
Drain is out the bottom of the turbo and into the sump.

Ok so not knowing exactly why you asked the question here is what I mean. You can't have hard pipe all the way. it has to have some sort of soft pipe in between. if you issue is that you want to do a new turbo conversion then buy a pipe like this and modify it to suit the new application.
If you have a current tdi and the pipe is leaking heck just get a new one. They are not that expensive. If you feel it is way too much then take the entire pipe to a hydraulic shop and see if they can put a new piece in the middle.

Its for a conversion.

I asked if a complete hard line can be used because i saw that the oem hose has deteriorated, and wanted to possibly avoid that in the future.

But as ur first post stated that it will definitely crack, i got it made up in a steel braided teflon lined hose.

Just remember that some turbos want a big return. For instance garrett t3 cores want a minimum of 16mm otherwise they tend to smoke.
