ABS/ESC Control Unit on your vehicle with Identification Number (VIN):WVWZZZxxxxxxxxx

Dear Sir Madam,

Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft in Germany has established that on vehicles of a limited production period the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) / Electronic Stability Control (ESC) control unit becomes thermally overloaded and the earth connection may be interrupted. Please refer to the Customer letter (attached) for details.

Should you have any queries please contact your preferred Volkswagen Dealer or call our Customer Interaction Centre (CIC) on 0860 434 737. When calling the CIC, select option 3 when prompted.

We regret the inconvenience but appreciate your co-operation.

Please contact your preferred Volkswagen approved Dealer as soon as possible to make an appointment. Please print out this mail which includes the VIN number of the affected vehicle and the attached document and bring these along with your Service Schedule when submitting your vehicle.

Yours sincerely,

Volkswagen Group South Africa
Customer Interaction Centre
Attached PDF:
Dear Sir/Madam
Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft in Germany has established that on vehicles
of a limited production period the Anti-Lock Braking System (“ABS”) /
Electronic Stability Control (“ESC”) control unit becomes thermally
overloaded and the earth connection may be interrupted. If the earth
connection is interrupted the ABS/ESC control unit fails and cannot help to
stabilise your vehicle, especially in critical driving situations, such as
oversteering, understeering or emergency stops and cannot reduce the risk
of skidding. This may increase the risk of an accident.

For safety reasons it is therefore necessary to carry out a software
modification on your vehicle. The work required will take approximately 30
minutes and will be performed free of charge. In some instances a longer
period may be required. Until the software modification has been carried out,
please keep the vehicle well within its handling limits by adjusting your speed
in advance to suit the visibility, weather, road and traffic conditions.

Please contact your preferred Volkswagen Dealer without delay to make an
appointment. Please bring this letter and your Vehicle Wallet with you when
submitting your vehicle.

Should you have any queries please contact your preferred Dealer or call our
Customer Interaction Centre (“CIC”) on 0860 434 737. When calling the CIC,
select option 3 when prompted.

If you have sold your vehicle or taken it out of service, please complete the
reply card reflected below and submit it to your closest Dealer.
We regret the inconvenience, but appreciate your cooperation.

Yours faithfully
Karen Strydom

Ja but they won't recall them for the faulty cam chain tensionsers.

Bunch of thugs. They will only recall a car when it could potentially endanger a life, not if it will cost you money...

Does anyone know if VW carry out this "software modification" will they wipe the software leaded on the car?

Also fixing this with only software tells me that they only nursing the issue and not rectifying it.

Flipping bastards must recall the tensioner as stated above

Is there honestly still golf 6 out there that does not know about the cam tensioner issue and that has not done anything about it. Honestly yournown fault now if it fails. And yes becuase it is not a safety issue they won't. Tell me , if it was your company would you have?

Working in the food industry, any risk to a product must be recalled immediately. No matter the cost... so yes, I would.

Was there a fault with the money paid? Then why would it be acceptable to have a faulty product? Could this not be considered daylight robbery?

Ugh. nevermind. I have never bought a car new so honestly don't know this feeling you guys clearly have. I have never simply expected the manufacturer to pay for stuff and just fix it if there is a better / newer solution. I just sort it myself and not sit there wondering will if fail, will they pay. Sort it out - know it's right, done. Good luck hope you come right. Maybe sue them.

The engine controller and ABS controller are 2 seperate controllers so if the flash the ABS only then it will not affect the engine controller

That's good news. I'm still struggling to check mine, they won't assist me because I don't have the Enatis docs to prove I'm the owner, But I emailed them the VIN, Engine and Reg Number plus all my personal detail. I think that's Bullsh!t because my safety is at risk (potentially), and why would I esquire about something if I didn't own the car? Or if I stole it? Anyways, I'm requesting a copy of the docs from the bank.

In fairness, they also have an obligation to protect the privacy of those on their database.

Don't really want them to be allowing free and easy access to our info.

In fairness, no personal information will be given out, surely?
Its just to confirm if a certain vehicle is affected by a recall. I cannot fathom they would give out house address, phone numbers, dogs name etc...

True, and I understand the POPI act etc. But I gave them all my detail to confirm i own the car, and all I need is a "yes/no" answer to see if my car is affected.
