Polo 6n 2002 rough cold start

Post by Jasondj »

Hi guys

Been having this issue for months now but seeing the weather getting colder in Cape Town issues seems to be getting worse. Its weather dependent.

In the mornings the first swing the car idles very low shakes and dies all in few seconds, then when i swing again it starts 100% and idles perfectly.

Now with the colder season apon us the cold start issues is worse. Only after the 3rd or so attempt the car starts fine and idles smoothly.

Hot weather this is not a issue

I should add. The coolent temp sensor, spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap & rotor and fuel filter was changed +- 1200km back. Coolent temp was changed to original part and the issues was still there.

sounds like you throttle body is dying. if you hold a bit of throttle manually try to see what it does. if it starts and runs the yes TB is on it's way out. Can maybe try a recalibrate and see if it helps.

I did however do it once and still nothing, will do it tomorrow morning again to make 100% sure. Can a TB be tested on Vagcom on these mp9 motors?

Is the fuel rail not losing pressure? Try priming the fuel pump a few times before starting to rule that out..

no fule pumps get old and sometimes don't deliver the right presssure so do investigate the pressure.

Ok so ive done the test as Panic adviced and car still had the same issue. The car did backfire through the filter when applying full throttle and swinging on cold start. This morning i primed the pump a few times, could hear the pump, like a very high pitched sound, did it few times and then swing still no difference. Only thing is the pump might be very old. Just went through the records of the car (thanks woolworths for intensive records, what ever was done on the car it was written down) and theres nothing about a fuel pump being replaced. Can just the pump be replaced or is it the whole housing with fuel float also?

Didn't get it tested. What should it be and who in Northern Subs of Cape Town can test it?

So, haven't found someone yet to test my fuel pump. Working hours currently very long. A symptom i had for a while was when driving uphill and keeping the peddle steady the car loses power for a second and thought it was the fuel filter that was clogged up. After the major service about a month ago the issue went away. Yesterday the fuel level in the car was low, not empty (quarter tank is empty in my eyes) the car did the same like it use to when driving uphill (this only happened now and then before the service). So i recon its the fuel pump giving me this issue. Another issue we have is the car is pinging, had the timing done 3 times and the head was never removed (according to the intensive records Woolworths saved on everything done to this car) and might be the car is running lean as the pump cannot supply enough fuel. I googled that and some say it cant cause that and some say it can.

This car losing power/cutting out for a second is coming a while now especially when the fuel tank reaches quarter to reserve.

Coil has been replaced and this issue was still there even after the coil replacement.

yes all those could be cuased by a iffy fuel pump. But again without conclusive testing you are simply guessing.

Hi, i have a polo playa 1.4i. If anyone can help in finding the issue please advise. On a cold morning the car would start up like this( https://youtu.be/p0IYNBi3r4g) . Other times its normal. I have checked with another fuel pressure regulator, temp sensor, fuel filter, coil, battery, fuel pump relay and fuel pump. Still the same outcome
