Where to get c-notch done

Post by smashedmink »

Hi all

I desperately need to get a notch done on my Fox.
I would do it myself but i suck at welding so would rather leave that to a pro...
I don't mind paying a little extra, just want a professional job done so I don't have to pay to get it done again properly...

Any recommendations in the north/west johannesburg area?

Much appreciated

I show my ignorance... What's a c-notch, and how is it to be welded?

A C-notch is where a notch is cut into the chassis leg in the shape of a C to accomodate the drive shaft on lowered cars.
A plate is then welded in to finish off the job.

On my fox for instance, the right side drive shaft knocks the chassis leg when hitting even small bumps.
So the c-notch allows the drive shaft to pass through the chassis leg with enough clearance.

[irony on]
Well, the chassis leg is just there to "carry the cradle and related items" (read that here, just the other day)

That's why its welded back up, and the small amount you're cutting away doesn't jeopardize structural integrity (Or shouldn't if executed correctly by a professional)

Yup I suppose professional workshops that does that do some crash testing to see that it did not compromise the chassis......

With regards to trucks in the US, notching the frame is common practice.
Agreed the chassis setup is far from similar on our passenger cars, but with regards to a "pipe-notch" as they refer to what is commonly done on our vehicles it is claimed to have the same structural strength as an un-notched chassis.
Although a deep pipe notch is considered to be 76% weaker than stock.
Different methods such as a bolt in type notch decrease strength by as much as 80%, half circle notch and step notch claim to reduce strength by about 10%

All ratings are as per Finite Element Analysis.
