3rd Gear Change Problem - VW Polo Vivo

Hi Guys,

My beloved 2011 Polo Vivo 1.4 hatch car has developed a problem when I change into 3rd gear. Shifting into 3rd gear is no longer smooth and I find that sometimes I have to depress the clutch more than once before the transmission slips into 3rd gear. Worse still, there have been a few times when the gear seems to have engaged but thereafter produced a horrible grinding sound.

Anyway, a friend has advised that it could be one or a combination of the following:

1. Low transmission fluid
2. Worn or damaged synchro
3. Gear linkage damage

Has anyone had similar problems and how have you resolved them? Aside from VW, are there other reputable places/mechanics that you would recommend to resolve my problem? I am hesitant to approach VW first because of budgetary constraints.

Please advise.

Try Poy eloff search on here or look on facebook for 8Vperformance and ask sarel on there - it is his dad.

Am currently working out of the country and haven't had a chance to get this sorted. Anyway, you can get a hold of Poy on 082 331 8848. He is based on the East Rand.

I did call the oom and he referred me to his son which is fully booked for the next 2 weeks. Thanks Sir

Hi Siyanda,

I was referred to a Poy Eloff (082 331 8848) on the East Rand. However, before I could arrange to take the car to him, the problem just disappeared. Subsequent routine service done on the vehicle at VW where I have specifically mentioned that they check what the problem could be has not yielded any plausible explanation on what the cause could have been. They have simply said that all looks well & whatever the cause might have been is not there anymore. I have not had any gear change issues since then.

Quite mind boggling.
