Golf 3 gear selector problem
Recently I've been having an issue with my golf 3 gear selector getting stuck in reverse.
It goes into all gears smoothly however when you try get out of reverse with the engine on or off and with the clutch in or out.
When trying to get out of reverse the selector has a lot of play and almost seems like it's in neutral as you can almost move it into first but it's still locked in reverse.
I thought it may be selector bushes but haven't had the time to look further into it.
Any input will be appreciated.

Re: Golf 3 gear selector problem
Undo the links form the gearbox and try to move it there. If still hard then it's in the box.
If not it's an adjustment in the links.

Thanks for the info Panic, I'll have a look at it this evening. Could it possibly be clutch related too or would that be all the gears?

Re: Golf 3 gear selector problem
Bad news it that case. I disconnected both linkages attached to the box while I had the car in reverse and it's a proper fight to try and disengage reverse but I can't ever completely get it out of gear by hand.

I am going to assume this detent bolt should not be coming apart and actually coming out of the "nut/housing" when you point it downwards?

Re: Golf 3 gear selector problem
Such a small part causes such a large problem, trip down to Goldwagen and reverse is no longer an issue.

Re: Golf 3 gear selector problem
Why on this living earth would you take the gear detent out to fill oil. there is a massive hole on the side of the gearbox that is meant for that. or even pull the speedo drive out if you have to work form the top.
