How strong is a caddy bakkie accident wise

Post by slakkie »

Don't know much about caddys and need one as an extra delivery vehicle.
I'm not talking about the new panel van but the old shape.
I see the front end looks like a vw golf mk1 / citi shape. Does this mean accident wise / passenger safety wise it is just as weak as a vw golf mk1?

Worse. The cab is shorter, meaning less structural strength. And less space for escaping any cab intrusion.

Let's face it, it's a 40-year-old design - it's debut was in 1975.

Chev ute up to 2007 with or without airbags can tick most of your boxes for a safe affordable easy to maintain work vehicle.

Newer than 2007 buy a Nissan NP200.

Thanks for that but regarding the Nissan NP200... besides looking better than the new chevy ute facelift models... I heard their engines are expensive as opposed to the 1.4 liter corsa for R6900 at Lopec and engine import companies. Same with spare parts. So why would you recommend a NP200 vs a Chevy 2008 model or 2009 model.

I recommend the Nissan as it's cheaper on all fronts vs the chev and ford bantam.

I worked for a Nissan dealership last year selling parts and across the board NP200 parts are very affordable when you compare to the other brands and to aftermarket. Nissan S.A. did a price comparison study of genuine vs "pirate" parts for service items and common wear and tear items and in 80% of the cases genuine was cheaper.

I can't comment on the engines as I have yet to see one in worse condition than a blown head gasket. The engines are also bases on the Renault Clio I 1.4 engine and aftermarket engine spares are readily available due to its epic production run. The same engine is used in the Dacia/Renault Sandero and Logan, which to me would mean that a steady supply of second hand ones can be had (same as the earlier Opel Ute). As a testament to its durability we had one as a workshop vehicle and it clocked 200000km in September. This vehicle is driven by 4 drivers and spends a lot of time on farm roads. Motor has never been opened. Most major work done was suspension (obviously), the clutch and gear cables.

It's typically a Nissan, in other words it's not the fastest or the lightest on fuel or the most stylish car, but it is the best all rounder that can be had for the money. Last I checked a base 1.6 8v with A/C went for +/- R140000 brand new.

I'm sorry for the long speech and stuff and I don't want to sound biased, but I took a close look at the competition and in that class of vehicle the only choices are the chev and the Nissan for new cars, and for me the current chev is not my choice as a work horse. It's quirky and gimmicky in its interior design and doesn't have enough head room and leg room. The big head lamps also bug me somehow.

The NP200 is roomy by comparison and has enough space behind the seats for the spare wheel and still have legroom. Nice also for sound. The gauges are large and easy to read (Renault Clio) and the switches are simple and sturdy. Last check out the Stealth edition Nissan NP200. Some nice little cosmetic changes and it looks awesome.

Sorry just to add, when I am talking NP200 I mean look at a new one or a slightly used one.

As far as the 2008 Chev ute (old shape) is concerned if you can get a clean low milage one that is my first choice, because it's the challenge that Nissan answered and met with the NP200. I would buy one in a heartbeat if I had the money. The only hassle now is their age and milage and the increasing scarcity of the aforementioned clean vehicle.

So compare apples to apples when making your choice and maybe also speak to your accountant as well, as the vehicle is for your business. They might have a way for you to buy a new car and work it into your business expenses and be able to claim the tax.

Thanks. Much appreciated for taking all that time to explain everything.

I see the NP200 has a 1.6 liter engine which cars share that engine that are cheap. Renault clio is 1.4 - I know the nissan micra 1.5 diesel shares the NP200 1.5 Diesel engine.
I'm quite convinced to find a low mileage np200 now. I like the np200 more than the new chevy ute.

Renault Logan and Sanderos for starters. Renault sell their engines to a number of different manufacturers including Opel and Mahindra.

If you want a little more for your money look to for a 1.6 16v high spec. Lots of bang for buck used car, and generally better maintained vs the 8v.
