Sunroof service

Post by Crawler »

So I got to my car the other day after warrior race and the roof lining was wet, assuming the sunroof is either leaking or the drainage is blocked.

I am going to see what I can do in regards to the drainage, check it and clean it.

Called Webasto, they will not touch a factory fitted unit.

Who else can I try on the east rand?

Thanks guys

I was just gonna start a Thread on this topic until i saw yours.
Dont mean to Thread jack.. i wanna find out how to clean the sunroof Drainage system as well but for G5 GTi
There is no leaks or anything currently but just would like it to be cleaned as a piece of mind before a leak does start.

Anyone has a DIY on cleaning the Sunroof Drainage system on MK5 Gti ?
Street Racing is boring except when a car is going at least 140km per hour upside down.

Webasto technical told me over the phone, in all 4 corners there is apparently a little hole, use compressed air to blow them out, then pour water in the tray to see if it filters away.

I have been trying to get this fixed a well.. The way that VW supposedly services these drains is they use a strong cable like the an speedo cable and they push it through the drain holes. there is 2 at the front and and 2 at the back of the sunroof. Below is the a diagram & write up of what it looks like.I haven't had the chance to test it out though so let us know what come of it.

1 - Water drain hose
2 - Water drain valve
3 - Cover
Note
For cleaning, a locally manufactured tool made from a speedometer inner cable, approx. 2300 mm long is recommended.

Front water drain hoses:
The front water drain hoses → Item are routed along the A-pillars and finish at the plenum chamber. Cleaning is done from the sunroof panel aperture.

its like you guys read my mind, left my car in the rain during the week and the roof was a bit wet on one side, i asked VW and they said to also buy a tape that is taped around the roof where the grass rests when it is closed, i remember removing it when i was removing the roof vynil as i thought it was the remainder of the sticky residue, i will also try this one thanks guys

I've inquired about servicing an OEM medium sunroof at VW

All they do is re-grease the rails and check if it operates flawlessly and voila, R280 later. I too need to sort out my sunroof (unblock the drainage lines)

I however got the worse end of the stick, could this be the cause of a blocked drainage line?

The interior lights went to heaven. Upon checking the fuses, i discovered that non of them popped, all were still fine, but when testing the probes with a test light it didn't work.

I've went as far as hosing the sunroof area to check for water mark traces between the fuse cover and door but its always dry.

I was told the drainage lines runs alongside the front door card area, if that's the case, is that the reason for the havoc, as per pic attached. Is this true?

@ Chevy this most definetley could be die to blocked drain. simple test would be to pull the front side cover where the small tweeter is and check the pipe that runs there..then slide the sunroof all the way back, get a small jug of water and pour some water slowly down the front end of the sun roof(you will see a black tray there with drain holes as shown in above diagram. see where water runs out from.

So it happened again, this time on driver side

Water running next to the fuse box can never be a good thing

Anyone know of someone good with sunroofs at a decent price?

if the drainage is blocked, can water still get into the car if the sunroof is closed?

my polo also leaks on the left side but i assumed it was the windscreen

I cleaned out the drains on my jetta the other day, was very easy.

Go to checkers and buy 10 meters of curtain hanging wire for around R20. Lube the first meter or so with sunlight and feed it through from the "nipples" until they come out at the drain holes by the sunroof. You might not be able to see this for the rear sunroof drain holes, but just feed the cable as far in as you can. I'm going to trim about an inch off each of the 4 nipples so that the water flows through easier.

On the jetta, there are drain holes in each corner of the sunroof. The front 2 come out close to the door hinges, the rear 2 are under the car at the back on either side. Should be similar on the polo.

Thanks georgie, going to give this a go ASAP

2dean-zn - puddle water sounds hectic - maybe a grommet in firewall is missing or leaking

I only found 2 holes in the front

Passenger side the wire goes in about 30 cm and the driver side about 100cm - def something blocking it and no way of pushing it open

Wills trip A Pillars and see if I can see anything

where are they suppose to end? maybe try from that side as well
