FFZ gearbox vs cable shift - Max power/torque?

Hi guys,

So my gearbox is with Poy Elloff for new second gear synchro and the synchro hub. I have asked him to install a bolt kit to take care of the weakpoint. seals and oil will also be replaced.

What HP/Torque will thse boxes handle with the bolt kit before breaking again?

Currently making 150hp at KAR and I intend to go higher very soon. (closer to 170hp).

If i go cable shift how much will these boxes handle and what are their weak points?

Thanks for looking! :driving:

The box will be ok I had 160kw and 300nm on the wheels. The box held up to a lot of abuse.

Donald, did you have a stock box or did you have a diff bolt kit fitted to it?

Poy also mentioned that the stock engine mounts also affects the gearbox when drag racing and i should upgrade to a solid poly setup.

EDIT to add: what clutch setup were you using?

The box was 100% stock. I used a front poly mount to stop the engine from rocking and to stop axle tramp.

Proper mounts make a big difference - both my 16V's wheelspin so smooth that it feels like the clutch is slipping, no axle tramp, wheelhop or anything, just black lines in the road and the smell of burning rubber...

Edit to add - I'm using the same setup in both cars - Wikus's custom rear mount, solid GW press-in poly mounts on the side and ProThane Poly front mount, some vibration but not as bad as you would expect.

Diff bolts installed or stock?

Never knew the mounts impact the Gearbox, assumed it helped when changing gear and the impact on the linkage, Now that I think about it, makes sense. Thanks!

try removing those mounts to have a look - you'll be surprised. the rear one and the one under the battery seem to take on an od shape rather quickly.

I am using a stock AUG box. Mounting do make a difference. I have put full poly all round incl lower control poly bushes and a custom rear mounting from Wikus. What a beaut of a mounting. I can actually take the front mounting off due to the solidity of the rear mounting and the motor wont move. Pushing 200kw at KAR and box is still good.

I have a bolt kit in mine..
Was no use cutting corners when it was built..

020 boxes are good to 200Hp, seen some stock ones hold 250 but with bolted diffs. As long as you have a little mechanical sympathy with them you'll be fine, abuse any box and it'll break - or leave you

Did 320 on my 020 with bolt on kit but had nice strong clutch to help holding the power

Thanks everyone - That gives me a lot more confidence as the diff bolts have been fitted.

Poy called yesterday afternoon to let me know i can pick up my box from Sarel's shop.

Now to get a Dyno booking to jet for race fuel  cant wait to have her back on the road again! :driving:

I've also decided to fit Wikus's poly rear mounting while i'm at it. (already have the front poly mount installed and the side mounts i have press-in inserts waiting to go in)

Rather get the solid poly cambelt side mount - Wikus will have it too, instead of those silly inserts.

Get your pressure plate to Norbrake, ask Gavin to double spring and double strap it for you.

Do you have these in yours? How are they in terms of engine movement?
I have the eaxct same setup in my build - all from wikus.

Yip, got this setup in my GT, engine movement is minimal. I will have a look if I've got a video of my car on the Dyno where you can see the engine...

I been using all poly from Wikus. Only have good praises about that rear mount.

I used to eat up the old mounts and in turn, it used to crack my turbo manifold.

Thanks Viper, just goes to show what advice and help you get from all the ous on the forum.
