Hi all..

Over last few weeks, have a weird rubbing noise around the alt and water pump area. I took belet off and noise gone so definately one of the two..

I just need to establish which is exactly the culprit without buying one item and its the next.. The noise isn't there constantly and doesn't get louder or anything.. The belt is fine and tension is ok..

Anyone can help will highly be appreciated.

I even used the longer screwdriver and placed against alt to hear but sound is all different.

Most probably the water pump. What's the mileage on your car? You can also feel for play on the water pump pulley.

I span the pulley and its doesn't have much play..

Start the car and get a longish screwdriver, put the sharp end on waterpump/alternator and your ear on the other end... you will hear were the noise is coming from... unconventional but works

alternativelly, get some of that penetrating/lubricating fluid, the one that comes with a long thin red tube that gets pressed into the nozzle, so that you can have very accurate control over where you spray it.

aim the spray at any of the suspected components, don't forget the idler pulley over which the fan belt runs, those idler pulleys bearings are known to run dry and start to make noise.

the one where the noise goes silent is likely to be the culprit

I have known people to change steering pumps, air-con pumps, alternators etc, very expensive exercise, and the noise still doesn't go away....then they do the trick above, and when the oil gets into the idler pulley, the noise went away, and the replacement cost is minimal compared to the other big components.

One way to test the alternator is to take the belt off and spin up the pulley with your fingers, it should be quiet - no rumbling noises.

I will certainly.

The alt does sound a bit rough but not the noise that its making.

sounds like a wobble sound or so.

the waterpump does have a screetch.

Waterpumps , Meyle i heard is good but how does it compare to OEM?

Well Vw wants over R1300 for it :-)

Just buy the pump, you can use the same housing. Change your themostat while you at it. I used a GMB brand product, brilliant quality IMO.

GW Sells Meyle and in all honesty, I have used 3 of these and never had issues. Even have a Meyle part on my ABF.

I have been to one spare shop and offered me GMB. I wasn't really knowledgable about it though. They also said its good. Well the meyle one is R100 more so I thought I'd stick to what I know.. Vw quoted me for thermo R141 which isn't too bad.

I checked now and the waterpump is definetely making noise. I used the screwdriver method

Yes it's cheaper if you buy just the pump without the housing...

WAG is the GW house brand, never used it so cant comment. I always settle for topran/febi/meyle if I buy from GW...

Echlin or GMB from spares shops...

I've bought a GMB pump from Midas before and it served me well. Thermostat I will always go OEM for extra peace of mind. This is what I'll be fitting in both my 16V's - spot the difference...
