Hi guys

I replaced all the gear linkage bushes and in busy to put everything back together again.

Following this how to > http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/index.php?page= ... 2%2F2%2F15

Problem is, now all my gears are fukd. I can get reverse, and then it feels like first gear is in 3rd gear's position and second in 4th gear's position. Cant get into the normal 4th and 5th positions.

What to do?

IIRC the gap should be 10mm and not 19mm as shown in the link you posted on step 47. 10mm gap between the plastic clip part and the steel piece on the body. That plastic part need to clip onto the steel part on the small lip for reverse.

1. Put car into neutral
2. Loosen the pinch bolt that grips onto the splines
3. Set the gap to say 15 - 20mm
4. Tighten the pinch bolt
5. Check that you can get into first and second.
6. Repeat if you're not getting all gears by adjusting the gap with the pinch bolt loosened.

If you dont come right, try the following:

1) Disconnect pinch bolt and pull off selector arm which is part of the bolt assembly.
2) Manually engage second gear on the gearbox by using the selector arm on the gearbox. Start by looking for reverse, then come out of reverse into first and then second. Remember that first and second is against a spring in the gearbox so you have to push against the spring. You may have to try this a few times until you get a feel for the gearbox and where the the gears are positioned.
3) Once in second gear reconnect the selector arm and push the selector rod in as deep as possible. Tighten the selector bolt.

If done correctly your gear lever will be in the second gear position when you get back in the car.

Good Luck!!
