Intermittent White Smoke on MK6 GTi??!!

Post by Smok3X »

Hi Guys,

I need some advice.

My brother purchased a Golf 6 GTi 3 weeks ago and has had endless issues from day one!

The problem now is that it has this intermittent white smoke problem. I dont know how else to describe it. I have driven behind him several times, at full throttle there is no smoke, idle no smoke, overrun no smoke, cold start no smoke.

Then just randomly, there will be white smoke on overrun and then on idle at a robot for a few seconds. So much so, that you can actually smell the smoke inside the car.

The car has been to VW 5 times now! And they cannot find the issue. It had an intake, DP and software but now all tat has been removed.

VW have checked everything, compression test was fine and so was the PCV Valve...

What else could be causing this issue?

Its a 2011 6 GTi with 41 000kms on it.

Could be a turbo seal that's letting some oil into the intake on occasion. Have you checked the PCV system for leaks and/or blockages?

The car has been to VW McCarthy in Durban, 5 times as of today.

They claim that there is nothing wrong with the car. All the usual suspects, such as Turbo seals have been checked.

rear pcv which is built into the tappet cover has a check valve in it, this check valve fails sometimes and when enough oil builds up it pushes oil into the turbo.

a quick test - with car idling open the oil cap and lift it slightly, if you can feel a vaccum sucking it back down, then its likely that theres a pcv problem - front or rear is for you to find out.

A mk5 with this problem was fixed with a new tappet cover as the rear pcv was shot. Depending on how accurate vw's diagnosis of your front pcv was, will decide if its also your rear pcv thats gone

Sadly... all this drama has just been a bit too much and my brother will be cancelling the deal tomorrow.

To spend almost 300k on a car and have it go to VW 5 times in 3 weeks is just ridiculous.

Spending R300k on a 2011 model is just ridiculous. Tell him to search some more, Retail value on a 2011 DSG is probably around R240k now.

I would've taken it back too, you don't wanna deal with that just after buying a car. I had an issue with my A3 Sportback a few years ago. It needed a cylinder head replacement straight after buying it. Luckily for Audi Freeway Plan...

Depends on condition, extras, mods etc. I sold my 2011 Manual for R280k two weeks ago.

 You lucky bastard :hi: . I got R235k  and my car was spotless, granted I was in a hurry and the fact that the engine was replaced didn't help :bang: . I shall never pay more than what the book says though.

We are indian bud, we never pay more!  I said "almost"

It was R260k for a 2011 Manual with 41k on the clock. Plus the OE 6R LED Tail lights.

Anyway... He is looking for another one... anyone have a 6 GTi for sale with similar specs and price? :hi:

Solo takes the prize here , but a similiar issue I had was residual oil in the intercooler that seemed to release a bit into the system at random times
