Golf Mk1 OEM Steering rack assembly ..With pics . [emoji1]

Post by SayedMK1 »

Hi all just wanted to share this might be useful to some . .

Just getting my car ready for Vdub Campfest decided it was time to swap out the 20+ year old steering rack for the long trip down to JHB

Old rack and new Vw rack R995 brand new from agents rack boots 1 x Oem boot passenger side (longer than universal boot) R139 from agents  1 x Drivers side Universal boot works as original "R35"

Image

Rack with rack ends and tie rod ends
Image

Ends set to specified length 379mm from outer tie rod end center point to inner tie rod end .Note: not measured to the end of the inner tie rod end
Image

Centering steering rack passenger side
Image

Centering steering rack drivers side Note: take measurement from the inner section of the rack and not from the gearbox housing
Image

Centering passenger side rack end 67mm
Image

Centering drivers side rack end 69mm
Image

Length per side >> if measured correctly with the steering rack in its centered position you will have an equal size on either side of the rack in this case 445mm on each side, from the rack housing to the center point of the outer tie rod end

(Left) 445mm
Image

Right 445mm .bang:

Ready to install

Thanks for watching .

+1 Nice write up.

not surprised your old rack held up for 20yrs.
recently done the steering rack on my car parts also from agents.

here are the part numbers:

VW 17S 419 061 - Steering Rack (R843.20)
VW 17S 419 804 - Tie rods (R473.45 EA)

Dont have the numbers for the agent boots as i used the PARTQUIP universal boots and they set me back R30 a piece.

Thanks man . Got quotes first . the cheap rack was R550 from my local spare shop R896 from goldwagen R995 from vw surprisingly ... so for a few rands more its better to fit an original rack .as for the boots did you use the longer boot on the passenger side ? If u used the universal boot u might want to check it out guaranteed it'll wear out before time, it'll work but it stretches the hell out of the left boot .universal boot works perfect on the right

so i can buy original rack and pair it up with goldwagen rods etc?

It's the bit i cant justify, u get different quotes from different dealerships and i know it because i did my homework and shopped
around till i was satisfied with what i was getting. if i'm not mistaken my rack came with the ends and the tie rods were seperate pieces.

regarding the boots yes after u mentioned it i looked at the left side boot and it does look more compressed than the right hand side boot.
i should take your advice and fit the agent boot when the universal boot eventually tares in.

I know this post is not recent but did you need lock nuts for the inner tie rod as i did not get any.

Did you use the ones from the old rack.

Managed to sort it all out thanks to this post its prob the worst job iv ever done.

The Steering Rack is easy to get out and in but mating the splines to the steering knuckle was the worst job on the planet while lying on the floor.

Ill prob never do that again with the engine in.

Anyway thanks again
