golf mk1 doesn't want to start

Post by imoparker »

It started about 2 weeks ago. I put the key into the ignition and swung but only the interior lights came on but no sound from the starter. I then pushed/forced the key into the ignition and then swung and the car started. It worked for like 2 weeks but now that doesnt work anymore. Now i must kick start. Car has new battery and alternator.

What could it be? bushes on starter?

thanks

Hi there.

What model is it? I've had the problem that the main fuses next to the battery lightly corrode. This causes the car not to start and most of the components throughout the vehicle isn't working properly, even not at all. Just take sanding paper and sand the contacts, and slightly bend then scue.

just bridge the starter..wire from Bat. Positive to the thinner wire on your solenoid..note to have car in NEUTRAL!!!!!IF it starts then, then I would imagine your ignition insert or barrel could be stuffed.esp. If u say u forced key and it then started

Ok.......I replaced the ignition switch and the starter is still not kicking in

I looked at the connection to the starter and noticed that there is only one connection from the battery to the starter.....is that correct?

Can someone please post a pic of the connections to the starter?

thanks

:type: HI all, so my mk1 doesn't want to start from inside by turning the the key. If I start it outside by the starter, whilst the ignition lead is connected straight to the battery it starts first time. But the moment I try to swing from the inside it will just crank. Please help!

remove ignition switch and try to start from the switch using a flat screw driver, if it works then its the ignition switch thats faulty, if not then you need to add a relay to that ignition circuit at the starter end

When I turn the key, the ignition goes on and it cranks but doest start. When I connect the ignition wire to the battery it starts, but even if the ignition is directly on the battery and I put the ignition on with the key it doesn't take.

If you turn the ignition and it cranks then its not the ignition switch.....is it cranking when you try to start with key or just makes a tuk, tuk sound like a dead battery
