MK1 Citi Golf
Hey guys
i have a MK1 2006 model , 280 000 KM and counting on the clock.
My problem now is when i drive either long distance or sit in bumper to bumper traffic , the car just dies on me,switches off. battery is working at that moment.
When i try to start it doesnt want to start, after a while of doing nothing it starts again and i can drive. This has happend a few times.Mechanic at Bosch said it might be the petrol pump in the petrol tank which may become hot and allows the car to restart after it has cooled down. Now that would be a R2500 job BUT he is not sure if it will fix the problem. He also said nothing wrong with my Carborator...
So if anyone has had the same issue and managed to fix it..please let me know what to do??

Re: MK1 Citi Golf
1stly. Not a mk1.
And 2ndly. If its a 1.4 carb I would look for a new mechanic as there is no fuel pump in the tank. But only one on the motor itself.
I would check the coil. Feel it when it doeant want to start. If its hot then that might be your problem.

That's a mac sounds like he loves money, anyway it can be coil, fuel pump on the motor itself, tp100 and I had almost the same problem and it turned out the fuel filter was dirty

1970's to 1980's = mk1
anything after that = Citi X(Life, Sport, CTi, Rox, Velociti etc etc)
I had to replace two of these on different occasions.Bullet03 wrote:That's a mac sounds like he loves money, anyway it can be coil, fuel pump on the motor itself, tp100 and I had almost the same problem and it turned out the fuel filter was dirty
1) My cousins '93 Caddy didn't want to start so her boy-friend tried n running start (read: The idiot tried to tow start it at 80kph!!! End of story? Piston chamber filled with fuel and bent all 4 conrods.) Me and my dad went and had a "new" HV(1800) installed in place of the dead HV(1600), only after that the engine did not start. Done some tests and found no spark. Fit my old mans Caddy's ignition module and Voila!! She was alive.
Case 2) I lived with some people while working in PE and one night the lady phoned me and told me her '93 1300 Chico, mk1, just died while going into Uintenhage. Got there and there was no spark. Got some body to tow her home and the Saturday I went to Midas, got the TP100, installed it and drove the kak out of that 1300.
You can maybe just check the idling cut of valve on the carp, as I have seen these give a lot of shite on the Beetles, especially if there is an internal brake in the coil's windings.

It was a mk1 edition. Get your facts straight. MOERSE difference between a CITI golf and a Mk1.

hehehehe the old fight
I think it stopped being a mk1 when the C pillar crease was introduced, so there were actually very early citis that I see as mk1's ... 84 - 85 I would say

Strictly speaking: Mark 1 platform = All Golfs '78 to '84, before the Mk2/Jumbo and ALL CitiGolfs.

Re: MK1 Citi Golf
Mine did it once or twice, was the airbox that was not securely attached to the top of the carb, drew in to much air.
They are sensitive to air leaks etc it seems

Re: MK1 Citi Golf
I had a similar issue and went through weeks of trouble shooting and breakdowns in peak traffic. Lovely stuff.
Anyways my mk1 would die randomly and mostly when the engine was hot. There was no spark.
Went through a few coils and tp100. I was so desperate that i considered going back to the points and condenser setup..
Eventually found out the hall sendor in the distributor would act up when hot, then when it cools down the car would start and drive like normal.
After changing many coils and tp100's I replaced distributor and all is well now. So yes, a faulty hall sendor won't necessarily die completly, and can be intermittent in my experience.
Obviously, my issue was spark related. So before buying a new distributor, coil etc do the basic trouble shooting first. When it dies, is there fuel is there spark etc.
Lastly, please get yourself a Bosch distributor. The pirate part WILL leave you on the side of the road.
