Will this radiator fan make a differance?
Hi guys
I was thinking of cleaning/neatening my engine bay in the future and was thinking of that ugly radiator fan VW used in the Mk1's/Citi's/Fox's al these years.
Now my qeustion is, will this slimline fan work the same as the original?
I don't need extra cooling, but that will be a bonus. I just don't want it to work less eficient than the old one.
Basically it will be a looks mod.
The photo of the fan from an overseas forum, already installed in a Mk1 cowling, just as I want to use it:

Re: Will this radiator fan make a differance?
If it's the same size and wattage it should work the same. But generally there is a reason for that big ass ugly fan. It has some oomph which a slimline simply cannot match.

Re: Will this radiator fan make a differance?
This is my setup in my GT, won't fit on a normal Citi radiator though, I used a Caddy radiator with two 10" fans. The Caddy radiator is 66cm long compared to 61cm for the Citi radiator. It works well, I had it on my Velo as well and never had problems.
Current rides:

VW Golf - 78 LS 2.0 8V 4-door (2.1 ABF with throttles in progress)

Re: Will this radiator fan make a differance?
The caddy radiator except for being bigger is also thicker and the core is more densely populated with cooling tubes. It's quite a different animal.

Christo, the caddy, as in caddy bakkie? And also, is it a certain year model that you buy, or are they all the same?Torker wrote:This is my setup in my GT, won't fit on a normal Citi radiator though, I used a Caddy radiator with two 10" fans. But I have a secret weapon... IIRC Crawler said I can contact him for pricing, I think he works for Silverton Radiators.
If that fails, KY.

Re: Will this radiator fan make a differance?
@Panic
Thanks for the advice on the wattage. Will check that when I am at a Midas again. The 10" slimline is exactly the same size as the standerd fan.
I am a bit worried about what you said about the oomph.
@Torker
I will maybe do that when I have the money. I don't have enough KY for now.
I will how ever make n fiberglass mould of the original and duplicate it so that I have a twin cowling set-up when doing the fans.
One quick question, can you maybe post a link on my rides thread to your rides and engine build thread please?
@Psycho1400
No problemo! Always glad to learn something. I don't mind a because in my opinion, why make two threads about one subject?
That is how you learn!!

Re: Will this radiator fan make a differance?
Thanks! fits perfectly also on my Citi. But mounting the fans directly on the radiator like in the picture I imagine maximum cooling performance will not be achieved as the radiator areas not directly infront of the fans will not get much "fan" air; you would need a proper radiator shroud especially if you're going to use forced induction
