9n3 Polo GTI Ownership

Post by LFC »

Hi guys, please help, my cuz is looking at purchasing a 9n3 PGTI.

He wants to know what to lookout for and most importantly what the maintenance costs will be.

He is looking at one with +-70,000km on the clock.

Let's hope he is rolling in a GTI soon :hurray:

Thanks

when buying one, take for a test drive and give a bit of foot from 1st to 2nd and check if the 2nd gear scratch. these gearboxes has problem with 2nd gear synchro. when i bought mine, my second gear and synchro needed replacement (which the dealer paid for R12000 at mayfair gearbox)

other than that i havent had any other problems on mine...

LFC wrote:Thanks for the reply. What do the following items cost +- and at what intervals?

Cambelt - Yosh from unitronic does a complete cambelt, bearing tensioner, and metal waterpump with fitment for R3500 last time i spoke to him

Coilpacks - Yosh sells a set for around R1300 +-
Clutch - if the clutch goes, replace it with a VR6 Clutch and flywheel - probably around R5000 without fitment
Brakes - Ferrodo Premium front pads R900 a set, ATe discs R200-R300 a disc.

Does it use full synth 5w40? Not sure bro...almost think so.

Yup, full synthetic oil.
I have mine for about 90000kms now.
Had to have the turbo re-conned due to the shaft that went, other wise trouble free motoring! :driving:

Excuse me nosing in.

@PoloGtiman: The affore mentioned cambelt service does that include the plugs etc service or is that just the cambelt and related stuffs?

Also how much for the normal service with plugs, filters, oils etc? Take it the turbo gets serviced as well?

Excuse if I ask lot questions, am a curious bugger.

with regards to the servicing of a turbo, this doesn't happen to my knowledge unless there is an issue i.e. leaking seals or if you notice there is a drop in boost, then the turbo gets checked (and boost pipes and intercooler and wastegate and obviously scanning for error codes) but other than that a turbo is usually a low/no maintainance part as long as there are no issues and as long as the correct oil is used and propper cool-down procedures are followed.

hey bru, that price is just for cambelt service without plugs ect.

oil service is about R1000 at vw, im not sure how much a full service is? probably around R3000-R4000 but i have service plan.

the turbo does not get serviced...but will probably need a refurb sometime or when the car starts smoking as turbo seals go

Turbo does not get serviced as part of the regular service schedule... its not really a serviceable part.
In the example above there was an issue with the turbo hence it was re-done. These turbo's are known to be very good and you will not often see a turbo on a Polo GTI giving you issues

Also check that the lower control arm bushes are still ok as they tend to wear out quite quick, although thats a problem with all 9n3 polos.

90% of the issues that occur can be sorted with aftermarket/upgraded parts for a fraction of dealer prices.

Hi everyone. I know its 2018 but I have been looking at the 9n3 GTI. Can i still buy one, reading and browsing the page has convinced me. It would be my first hot hatch and I just keep hearing good things about these engines is there anything specific i should look out for? And who is willing to let theirs go?
