Ping Pong

Post by zain_c »

Hi guys...

So i bought a mk1 gti about 6weeks ago...its really a fun car to drive, goes well and the torque is quite punchy. Fitted a branch and Powerflow zorst so it sounds the part as well.

Only problem i'm having is when i'm highway cruising and floor it will ping :fear: From standstill and giving it stick till into 5th there will be nothing. But as soon as I'm driving for an extended period of time uninterrupted and just decide to punch the throttle it pings. Really annoying.

Car idles fine, and fuel consumption is normal...was thinking about fitting a thicker headgasket in an attempt to get rid of it.

No smoking either, fumes smell a bit rich but I've been told its the norm with these cars?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

How much does it ping? A little? A lot? Very mild or quite loud. Simple case of ignition timing advanced a bit too far, methinks.

Turn down timing a tad, also check if your vacuum pipe for the advance is not torn

Thanks for replies guys...it quite mild but loud enough for me to hear. The timing is retarded quite a bit running at about 15, these motors should be running at 24-28.

The vacuum pipe should run from dizzy to back of throttle body.

Then adjust the idle up using the idle screw...

I think you need to tune the car. Also are timing marks all correct at TDC?

yeah i adjusted the idle screw then all is fine...BUT then the car loses some of its aggression! But hey, i'd rather have a tame car than a pinging one.

Plan is to have it tuned, just looking for a place that can do it well, yip all timing marks etc are spot on.

Is it the K-Jet fuel injected one like the CTI?

My CTi also had a ping problem. When it is hot (100C on oil temp gauge and water temp in middle) it would ping when you quickly floor it in any gear. Just a slight trrrrt and then a very light pinging sound the whole time up to redline. It was annoying as I am a perfectionist and wanted it fixed.
I eventually had it at a VW specialist shop who fiddled with timing. We even put the timing on 0 degrees and when you quickly pull on throttle cable it will still do that quick ping. They eventually did a trick whereby they put permanent vacuum on distributor and did something to the timing. It was gone but car was very lazy. Fuel economy wasn't effected. But again, car was lazy. 1600's would be able to kick my @ss. My friends 1300 tazz had a 276 cam and cylinder head was gasflowed and skim. It could hold up to me the whole time up to 4th gear

I suspected something in the distributor was wrong but at R4,000 for a new one from Vw I left it with that vacuum trick we did.
Car was eventually sold. Thank goodness.

Re: Ping Pong

Post by zain_c »

jeez...yours sounded bad.

Yeah, its the Kjet as well.

Well i can gun my car from the line and it will be 100% even till into 5th. Only seems to ping if i'm driving a constant speed like on a highway and just quickly floor it in 4th or 5th i'd hear the pinging and as it climbing towards the red it will start going away.

I don't plan on selling the car as it's my project and I only pull it out for a drive once in a while. So i can live with it for now.

Even with the timing retarded the car still manages to dust off 1.6 Velocitis with ease.

Comp tests revealed nothing wrong. Constant comp of 9.5 in 3 of the cylinders and for some kind of strange reason (think it is mass production factory cast error) the 3rd cylinder was 10.5

Just remember that one batch won't give correct testing results. Use at least 3 tanks to get the old fuel out of the sytem.
Hope you come right. 95 didn't work for me and octane booster also didn't work.
I wonder now. I can't remember that my car did it with leaded fuel. Only noticed it with unleaded and LRP.
