Urgent Help : OIL PRESSURE ENGINE OFF! golf 5 gti

Post by user12 »

Hoping you guys can help shed some light, i have had a week from HELL. Heres the story:

THURSDAY : found oil to be low and filled a pint. Went to a show at the playhouse, did not see the curb turning into a lane and hit it. Tyre/rim = damaged.

FRIDAY : drive to work all fine, going home i get this oil pressure message telling me to stop. stopped checked oil, oil was a fine, seemed to have come on when going uphill.

SATURDAY : woke up at 10am to find 2 mongooses inside my engine bay curled up close to the battery

as you can see i could point the finger all over the show.
The strange thing is, that on a cold start in the morning, i drove the car for 25km with no light on, once i hit the uphill onramp, it came on again, and just keeps going on and off..
A mech told me that my oil pump is gone and i will have to shell out 18k for a new one. but he did not even check the car out.

From researching all over the show i have found that the oil sensor could be shot, or the oil pickup is clogged with sludge, i have a 2005 Golf 5 gti AXX engine with the PCV blockoff doing 223000km.
From what i understand all the junk is collecting in the sump. but i could be wrong. Any help would be appretiated.

Begin with the easiest, scan the car for errors. That should diagnose where the issue is. Going up a hill could mean either the car is being loaded and that causes the issue or the oil level is moving and causing a sensor to pick up a low level. What oil do you use?

thanks Ruan, i was advised by a tuner to use Magnatec 10w40 for this AXX engine.
Will get the scan done. Thought the scan would just show the same error its displaying on the dash.

in the meantime you can check oil pressure from inside the car using the climate control, think the code for oil pressure is 19.4

1. Hold down "ECON", and press the "up-vent" button (next to recirculation). Both temperature displays will read 00 or 00'0, and you can release the buttons once they do.
2. Twist the LEFT temperature knob until the display above reads 19’0.
3. Twist the FAN knob until the left temperature display reads 19’4 (like 19.4)

I would stick with oem spec 5w40 castrol hey... Your oil spec could maybe even cause your issue.

GTI 5 in genral dont have low oil level warning.
If pressure warning comes up and you found animals in the engine bay i would say check the wires first.
If that checks out remove the sump and then clean the oil pickup and reassemble.
I have had a number of them were the cars just needed oil sumps and pickups cleaned.

a Big thank , sent it in today for an oil change, engine flush, filter change, sump inspection and oil pickup clean.
I also changed the oil from magnatec 10w40 semi to shell ultra 5w40 fully synthetic.

the mech said that the oil pickup had a slight sludge buildup, and that the engine sounds quieter now.

The animals didnt chew any wires thankfully, Only the road test will now tell if my oil pump is going.

will update later when i get the car back. *praying*

hi all, i was really hoping I could get help regarding an issue Im having.

I have a mkv gti 2006 version 159700km on the clock, recently I got a warning oil pressure low. basically I threw in the wrong oil in my car 15w40, thinking that I wouldn't get any issues as my car was going for a service now at 160000km, is it possible that cause of the oil I'm getting this issue or is my oil pump that has packed up :bang: :(

I would really appreciate the help regarding this.

15W40 isn't correct but it won't cause oil pressure issues. Check the pickup as a first step.

Hi Im new to this posting place but I was wondering if you can help, I been reading up on the oil pump conversion and I was wondering who does it in cape town or could you recommend someone that does a good job at it.

I have a late 2006 Golf GTI, there has been some tuning done to it but nothing major or anything. For the past few months I have been getting the oil light on my car with the BIG stop icon appearing cluster. I have checked my oil some many times but it seems fine. I did a pickup clean but it still comes on.

I have noticed it only comes on when I drive her hard and make the turbo blow off that it wants to tear the exhaust off as I have a full freeflow system with no boxes on. Can you please tell me what could be the problem the moment I drive like a normal human after that the light goes off and never comes on again until I drive hard again.

Any idea? as the information will be much appreciated

Hi Guys, I need help with the similar problem.

I have a Jetta 5 2.0 TDi, it started switching off as I was driving and then at some point could start at all.

I had someone look at the problem and they said it was a fuse that was not delivering power to the diesel pump. After that was fixed, I drove the car for about 20km and then I got the Oil Pressure warning and the car switched. After it cooled down, it started but I keep getting the warning lights.

Someone had this mobile diagnosis thing and couldn't pickup any error.

Is there someone in Germiston or Alberton than can assist ?

There have been some issues on oil pump on the tdi. Without being able to actually measure oil pressure it is impossible to say if it is just a switch or an actual oil pressure issue.

What is your km on the clock?

I would start with dropping the sump, cleaning the pickup (blow with compressed air) and doing an oil + oil filter change.

Under what driving conditions does the light come on? When last was your oil changed?

Does the warning say “Stop switch engine off”?

You should also run a diagnostic scan and check on the car and if you have a error, your oil pressure sensor might be faulty. Try someone who has a vagcom/vcds or take it to VW for a diagnostic check.

If there’s no error, drain the oil, remove sump and clean the pickup. Then monitor, you can reuse your same oil if the sump has no sludge or other debris. Changing the oil is obviously better!

If the light comes on again then I will point towards the oil pump.

Btw, I just bought a high mileage 192xxxKM G5 GTi with FSH and will be doing a oil pickup clean asap.

Before stripping, scan your car for errors, even if no engine light is on I'm sure an immediate error will be registered. This will point you in a better direction. If you don't have vagcom/vcds and you close to the Vaal I'll assist with the scanning
