14i 2006 citi golf - won't idle
I've had this problem before and took it a place to be sorted, they said throttle calibration was needed which I had done (with Dyno and Diagnostic), last Thursday.
The problem seems to have come back.
Symptoms:
I would start car from cold, pull out of the yard and park in front of the house. Then later start again to leave for work, car would then rev up and down to 3000rpm and back to 1000rpm all on its own. I would then switch off the car. There after the car will not remain idling or start. If I give it petrol it will start but will not remain idling at 1000rpm, as soon as I let go of petrol the car will die.
I contacted the workshop I took the car to and will limping the car to them but I'd like some further input.
Any ideas?

Re: 14i 2006 citi golf - won't idle
I know but since the car was running great I never bothered.
No airtime for Whatsapp, no car for transport, work is on my ass, no money.... so sad right now.
You said I should clean my throttle body with carb cleaner right?

Re: 14i 2006 citi golf - won't idle
Okay an update on the story.
I limpted the car to a shop, bought some carb cleaner, realised I had no water pump pliers to remove the airbox piping (staying at my in-laws tools are at home), sprayed carb cleaner up the airbox pipe have know idea if it would make a difference, removed the plug under the throttle as it was full of sludge and sprayed that with carb cleaner.
Wiped the stuff clean as it was very dirty. (Funny last Thursday the car was Goch & Cooper for this problem and they recalibrated the throttle, dyno'ed and diagnostics, don't the clean too??)
Then limped the car to G&C, by the time I got there the car began to idle normally and not die.
Car was looked at and they car's working right in the workshop, tech says he's got alot of fault codes now since I unplugged the stuff but the car's working right
G&C's suggested 1 hours labour and they clean the intake, throttle etc... I decided not to as I have no money and have already paid quite bit for this to be sorted out before. Any ways will check tomorrow from cold start if Zain's advice of carb cleaner did the trick.
So ya.
P.S. thanks VWforum I would be well suckered if it were not for the help I get here.

Re: 14i 2006 citi golf - won't idle
uhhh I was basically just driving it to keep it from dying.
If I got to a traffic light I'd just play with throttle or switch off and then start and drive again.
The rev's were supposed to stop just below 1000rpm but it drops right down and dies. When it came right it first idled very week maybe 600rpm or something and eventually came back up.
Still wondering if its my cleaning or that the temp was finally at optimum that fixed the issue. That's why cold start testing is needed to be certain.

Hi Evilsheepclone47
Today (25Oct2014) my citi Chico 1.4 (carb) also started this trick where it doesn't idle when cold; what was the eventual cause of your citi's hassles and please can you - or anyone else who has had a similar experience - offer me some advice (car has done about 110K km)

Re: 14i 2006 citi golf - won't idle
The steps I took were buying a can of carburettor cleaner, cleaned the arm of the air box from air filter all the way to the throttle body, especially around the butter fly where the sludge is at its most.
There after its look at the temperature switch.

The carb cleaner advise also helped me a lot and saved me from the scavenging vultures. Had a similar issue a few months ago.
Re: 14i 2006 citi golf - won't idle
Hi guys. I'm also driving City golf 1.4i, I'm having same problems if idling when its cold it doesn't hold on to its idling but once I drive it about a 1 km it becomes ok . So I'm thinking of buying that cleaning kit

Re: 14i 2006 citi golf - won't idle
My citi 1.4i isles at very low rpm, almost 500 when cold. I bought a new throttle body and it’s worse. It jumps up and down even when I’m driving it. Cleaning isn’t the solution. Please assist.

Re: 14i 2006 citi golf - won't idle
Good evening
Got a 1.4 I 2006 golf
Car drove then looses power when foot flat on incline and the next morning started the car then it died again and does that
Previously there was a issue where the petrol pump wouldn't prime when turning ignition on so relays were changed and it was fine
Anybody that could recommend anything
Thanks

Re: 14i 2006 citi golf - won't idle
Got a 2007 1.4i Golf - SORTED
overnight it stopped idling. Drove around fine one day... then the next morning it revved high and died. It drives around and starts fine with the throttle but will not idle at all???
I will have a look at the throttle body...
Previously I had an issue with the cold temp sensor so i got a new one ... but still no idling!
Whoooo Hoooooo! SORTED
it was easy enough to remove the throttle body (4 cap screws) I unclipped the connector and cleaned the TB well with 2 cups of diesel.
wiped it off with a clean rag, fitted the connector and bolted back on with the 4 cap screws.
Started first KICK and IDLES LIKE A PANTHER!!!! started it 4 times in a row and still idling like a wet dream
Thanks guys... I love this site
