Recommend me a battery for the polo please
Hi guys
So I think the battery on the polo is on its way out. The car would not start yesterday morning. Push started it and drove to work (14km's). Went down to the car about 2 hours later and checked it started first time. Went out at lunch and drove about 8km's before parking off again until the afternoon. Car started and drove the 14km back to home.
Last night I had to move the car out the garage at about 20:00 and she would not start. Push started again this morning and she ran to work fine.
Is there a way to 'save' the battery before replacing it (i.e. place on trickle charge overnight?)
If I am to replace it, which brand would you recommend and are there any to stay away from?
Also, do I go with something with more cranking power given that I am running the ADY in the polo (and I have some sound in the car if that makes a difference).
Any advice would be welcomes as I am admittedly quite dof when it comes to batteries.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Recommend me a battery for the polo please
Lawrence is the battery one that still has the screw off bits so you can fill with water or a sealed unit?
If you can open it. check the water levels make sure its not low. if it is. top up with distilled water and give the car a charge or a good run
normally this will save it but chances are you gonna need a new one
I just got a Delco for mine also running ADY with Sound its a 452 i think will double check.

Have you checked that the alternator is charging the battery properly?

Re: Recommend me a battery for the polo please
Turn OFF all lamps and electrical components.
Place the vehicle in transmission range NEUTRAL and apply the parking brake.
Carry out the Load Test and No-Load Test.
Switch the Battery Tester to the ammeter function.
Connect the positive and negative leads of the Battery Tester to the corresponding battery terminals.
Connect the current probe to the alternator B+ output lead.
With the engine running at 2000 rpm alternator output should be greater than as shown on the graph.
Switch the Battery Tester to the voltmeter function.
Connect the voltmeter positive lead to the alternator B+ terminal and the negative lead to ground.
Turn all electrical accessories off.
With the engine running at 2,000 rpm, check the alternator output voltage. The voltage should be between 13.0 and 15.0 volts.
There we go my son. may the volts be with you.

Re: Recommend me a battery for the polo please
First get a voltmeter,
Then do a battery test.
1)Connect the voltmeter directly across the "Battery Terminals". (NOT to the Cable Clamps)
2) While watching the meter, Start the Car.
3) The Battery Voltage should Never fall below about 10 Volts.
If it does:
a) The battery is either "Low in Charge".
b) Or The Battery is "Low in Water".
c) Or The battery has a "High Internal Resistance".(Possibly Sulfided Plates and probably Time for New Battery?)
Repeat This Test BUT:
1) Connect the voltmeter directly across the "Battery Clamps on the Battery Cables".
2) This Reading should be Within 0.1 Volt Maximum, the Same as 3 Above.
***If NOT, Clean Battery Terminals and Clamps.
2a)If Necessary, Repeat Test to Varify it is now OK.
Repeat This Test Again, BUT:
1) Connect the Voltmeter Directly Across the Positive Terminal of the Starter and it Case Ground.
2) If the voltmeter reading is More than 1/2 Volts Lower than the Previous Test,
You Probably have a Cable or Connector Problem!
Check the Connections between the Cable and the Cable Connectors. ON BOTH ENDS.
Alternator Test:
1) Start Car and run at a normal idle.
2) Connect a Voltmeter Directly Across the battery Terminals.
3) Turn on Headlights to High Beam.
4) check the battery Voltage.
The Battery voltage Should read between about 13.8 to 14.2 volts. (Possibly up to 14.5 Volts.)
5) Increase motor speed to about 1500 RPM. The Alternator should now produce a battery voltage between 14.2 and 14.6 Volts.
If it is Lower than 14.2 volts, the Alternator probably is suspect.
6) Now, Maintain the 1500 RPM and Turn off the Headlights. Run this test for One Full Minute.
"The Battery Voltage should NEVER Exceed about 14.8 Volts".
If it Does, the Alternators Voltage Regulator is probably Faulty, over charging the Battery

If you do havta get a battery, look into either a deltec/varta from deltecpower in pinetown.

Re: Recommend me a battery for the polo please
Thanks for the info.
Now in terms of the size/power of the battery - should I stick with the size I have (same battery that was used in the 1.4 before I put the 2l in) or should I get something bigger/stronger?

What is your current batt size? I had a 658 in my polo and it did the job very well, a little bit doesn't harm anyone.lawrence wrote:Thanks for the info.

unless you're running some hectic sound system, i dont see the need for you to fit a bigger battery.

Re: Recommend me a battery for the polo please
Sounds like your battery is on the way out. My car made the same and just replaced the battery.lawrence wrote:ShaunSHAUN wrote:What is your current batt size? I had a 658 in my polo and it did the job very well, a little bit doesn't harm anyone.lawrence wrote:Thanks for the info.

Current battery is a 628
Firstly, check battery water.
If your problem persists, get the battery checked at a battery center.
If battery is dead. Get yourself a 628 Sabat Silver Calcium maintenance free battery. Cost roughly R780.

A Google search says the minimum Ah for that car is 60Ah, so short answer is no.
