Worth fitting VR6 motor in MK1 Golf???
Hi Guys
I am toying with the idea to fit a VR6 motor into my mk1.
Currently have a 1.8 8v carb.
Is it worth even looking at???
Or do i just fit a 2.0l motor and modify that?

Re: Worth fitting VR6 motor in MK1 Golf???
Bought the PVW this weekend.
There is a guy Nash that is building a MK1 R32 twin turbo. They call it the Nasty Rabbit. Will check if I can find a link.
But hell this guy put a lot of work and time and money into it.

Re: Worth fitting VR6 motor in MK1 Golf???
ABF motor = +-140kg
1.8T 20V motor = +-150kg
12V 2.8 VR6 motor = +-170kg
Not that much heavier than the others actually. Main problem is that the other motors lean over backwards in the engine bay making the mass more centralised over the driveshafts while the VR leans over towards the front.

Re: Worth fitting VR6 motor in MK1 Golf???
It has been done but it isnt just a simple engine swap. You will be engine and gearbox, modded side shafts and then theres the fabrication required to get it to fit into a mk1 engine bay. Budget around R50k for this attempt.

Anything is possible with the right money/skill/time/etc.
If you really want a Mk1 VR6, do it. It might not the the best track toy but who cares (if that's not want you want)?

Re: Worth fitting VR6 motor in MK1 Golf???
depends on your budget.
You can fit 2.0 8v for around R4500 for the motor and then do some headwork and a cam with a decent management and it will set you back around R12k.
You can go fit 2.0 16v ABF for R10k the motor and do same stuff but then cams etc are more expensive as there are two so budget around R20k for a worked one.

Most turbo vr6 swaps make under 2002k2, I have seen 16vs make more for less, so rather go with what works for sure, unless you have too much money to waste, then be different

There was a VR6 turbo in a mk1 at the rock raceway on saturday. Fills the engine bay nicely.

Re: Worth fitting VR6 motor in MK1 Golf???
Bru if thats what you want, then go ahead and do it. Nobody is going to stop you. People will tell you its not the smartest choice, less power more money blah blah blah, but **** it if we all did the sensible thing day in and day out we would probably still be living in caves huddles around the fire saying hmmmm this isnt too bad. If you can find a gearbox then i say go for it. You will have to get custom side shafts made and make up your own mounting and what not. but yes it is possible and yes it does fit.Just.

If all labour done by urself yes R20k is the budget for a stock one.VWicked wrote: You can go fit 2.0 16v ABF for R10k the motor and do same stuff but then cams etc are more expensive as there are two so budget around R20k for a worked one.
I did mine all myself and worked out R17k and I had all the FI bits already in place and got ABF for R8500.
So add some more for tank, fuel pump etc.
I would love a Mk1 VR. Im sure it will still go better than a 2.0 8V.
If your budget says OK. DO IT!

Re: Worth fitting VR6 motor in MK1 Golf???
Dont do it.
When you eventually get pulled over, your car will be impounded.
Thats a fact and nobody can change it...
You will live with the fear of losing your car every single day it leaves home!
Unless its a dedicated track or drag car... Dont do it.
An ABF has similar risks, but will make similar power for alot less.
My 2 cents... up to you.

rather go the 16v route. cheaper in the long run. VR will cost you like they say around R 50k to do properly...

I would do it but for very different reasons than just getting more power...
Then they should start impounding almost all superbikes...PoLonY wrote:Durban cops reckon its too powerful for a citi golf...Mc3103 wrote:why will it be impounded? Even if he goes through the correct registering procedures?Smok3X wrote:Dont do it.

Re: Worth fitting VR6 motor in MK1 Golf???
Guys, lets be realistic here...
Cops are not THAT stupid.
Its a V6... Lets say that one more time... a V6 in a Citi Golf!
and even though we all know that it isnt really that much more powerful than an ABF and that the conversion has been done succesfully many times with great results!
When the Police see that, they just go absolutely crazy! Well, atleast in Durban anyway and the thing is, you cant blame anyone for it or say they are unreasonable... its a V6 in a Citi Golf, you REALLY REALLY dont have to be a genius to figure out that it was not meant to be there.
Trust me, I know of more than one guy in Durbs that had a FULLY registered MK1 VR6, all the papers in order and once caught at a roadblocck, that was it! The car will be get an ADMIN MARK against it and forget getting a disc after that...
Yes, there are dodgy, expensive ways around that... but its still a continous risk every time you drive it on a public road... and once the cops in your area know about it, thats it! You will have to remove the motor or lose the car to the pound! It has happened to guys in Durbs with ALL papers in order!
Even if you try and be smart and go legal with the guys... eventually even a judge will tell you to get lost man, its a V6 in a Citi Golf!
Like I said, up to you, but I personally feel it just is not worth it for a car that is used daily...
I would love to have a VR6 Citi for drag! What a beast and wat fun! But NOT for a daily guys...

OK so a 20VT in a citi golf is still fine then? the boost pipes and intercooler and copious amounts of more power will not throw the cops off at all, aslong is its not a 6 cylinder?Smok3X wrote:Guys, lets be realistic here...
Oh and its a 6 cylinder, not a V6!!!

Re: Worth fitting VR6 motor in MK1 Golf???
sooooooo a 2L16V turbo with NOS is fine, but a vr6 in a mk1 isn't?Smok3X wrote:Guys, lets be realistic here...
