mk1 golf cutting out - fuel starvation

Having this problem for a while with my ABF cutting out. In my quest to solve the problem I have changed:

New coil
New dizzy and plug
New ignition switch
New AFM with loom

My next step is the fuel delivery. I am running the stock carb tank with mr turbo fuel pump.I am not sure if the pump struggles to pump when fuel is at a low level? The fuel pump does buzz loud but it always did this. Can I put a facet pump before the fuel pump to suck the petrol? Or go FI tank with mp9 gravity feed pump?

Car cuts off and sometimes gives a miss and the then shuts off. After a minute of 2 starts up normal

where is the pump mounted, inside or outside the tank
does she behave when the fuel level is above maybe half tank

Its an in line fuel pump - on outside. I haven't yet to fill it to half and see. Car is virtually undrivable now on just over quater tank

does she cut off only when driving or also when parked and you rev the car

All of the above, but on the dyno it behaved

hard to say bru, could be the pump itself or maybe the pickup pipe from the tank is blocked or not going all the way down to the bottom of the tank, think you should start checking the pick up in the tank, then fill more fuel.
Also could be the fuel pump or even the fuel filter inself

Filter was changed. Will fill more fuel and see

you will have to change that tank or use a facet pump at the tank with an accumulator. We don't all harp on about the tank change for nothing. You really have to go there.... on the dyno it's standing still and the fuel is not moving around. Fuel injection pumps simply don't suck fuel from a tank over the top. You are wasting time money and effort on other solutions when the correct and obvious one stares you right in the face.

I have checked the fuel yesterday. I have opened the fuel line at the fuel rail and there is alot of pressure coming out. I have tried starting yesterday. It idles for a few seconds and shuts off.

Try restricting your return pipe to tank, take a plier and press the rubber return pipe, and get someone to start car. This will elliminate fuel rail and FPR.

Running a carb tank with external pump is always gonna be a problem, been there done that.
You can run a carb tank, like I do now, but with an internal pump, works perfect. It's a cheaper and less work option. No need to drop axle and remove tank.

Thanks for reply. Will try restricting the return pipe later. I hope I don't have to hunt for a ABF rail too

i had the same kak but more on right turns.try not to re-invent the wheel by doing funny things.
just get yourself a fi tank.
it comes with an internal swirl pot.
turbo racer on the forum is selling one for R500.

I'm having a similar problem. Replaced fuel separator and fuel pump but the car sometimes just starves fuel while driving and then shuts off. However, if I by pass the fuel separator and connect the fuel line straight from the fuel pump to the carb, then fuel starvation does not occur. However, that consumes waay too much fuel. I've replaced all of my fuel Lines as well so now I don't know what else it can be

Am having the same problem but even I connect the gas line from pump to carb it's still cutting off when am driving so now I don't know what's the problem

Start by telling model of the car and then go check the above posts.

Was the fuel lines, fuel filters or carb recently serviced?

It's a golf 1 with a carburetor the thing is before when I sprayed it with a carb cleaner it will start an continue to work like normal but after time it will repeat the same problem if I suck the petrol with my mouth it's difficult to suck it it's something is bloking now I don't know maybe it's the fuel line or it's the filter or the carburetor cause I changed the pump

Hi guys. Sorry to jump to another topic. We fitted the carburetor on our jetta. Now i am looking for something like a diagram to connect everything to the carburetor. I dont want to pay someone if i might be able to do it myself. Can someone help with a sketch please.
