howzit guys,

i used my citi 1.4 this morning and all was good.

then all of a sudden it did a backfire sound and cut out.

it starts and idles fine... but as soon as i rev it cuts out.

if i rev really slowly and get it past 2500revs it revs perfectly. what could be the problem?

anyone here know?

Hey man.

Either water temp sender or coil.

Could be fuel pressure as well, broken rail? Water temp sender will just make it go rich shouldn't stop it from revving up ...

i just removed the 4 pin wiring plug from the water temp sender and the car had a very lumpy idle. i then removed the water temp sender and put it back now the car idles lumpy and cant rev at all. idle is gone very lumpy.

i think ill replace the water temp sender and then the coils... i hope its not a broken rail that sounds expensive

i should have mentioned , there was a tiny puddle - (very very small) i drove through but i checked and double checked the distributor and the leads all are dry. do u guys think i should just wait a little to make sure everything is 100 percent dry?

can someone tell me if the red circled part is the coil? i see its sparking when the car idles...

i seem to have confused distributor with coil

Sounds very similar to when my fuel rail went, try take the fuel pressure regulator off and move the inner pipe of the fuel rail around, if you feel it moving or hitting the outer pipe then its probably that.

Cost a little over R1000 for mine from Goldwagen, but if you look around Gumtree enough, you might find one too.

Edit: Another easier way to check, is to block the rubber fuel return line with pliers or something, if the car does idle better, then its probably fuel pressure and most likely the rail

That's the coil!
If you can see sparks at the coil on idle and the HT lead is not damaged, the insolator on the coil might be damaged.
Replace the coil in that case.

thanks for the replies guys.

Went to goldwagen and got a new coil.... car wouldn’t start at all. Goldwagen exchanged unit for another one and all is working 100% now.

thanks again guys i learned something new today.

Depends which way it fails... if the sender is telling the ECU that the water is hotter than it actually is then it will lean out the mixture. I have had this on 2 different cars. The one wouldn't start at all and the other one would start and idle (albeit very rough) and as soon as you tried to rev it, the motor would die. A new water temp sender fixed both cars.

Zi, yes if you can see sparks when the car is idling then the coil is cracked (usually happens when water gets sprayed on it when it is hot).

I had this on my friends Polo and it had the same symptoms as your car.

Hi guys, I have a Citi Golf 1.4i sport MK1 (AGY motor) - have just rebuilt the head after overhauling the motor. Started the car and it will not rev past 3000 rpm.
The car is very sluggish, it sounds like it is starving or the timing is out - BUT - The timing is spot on, we have replaced the coil, distributor, water temp sensor, checked the fuel rail, swapped out the fuel pressure regulator, MAF sensor, checked fuel funnel and inside tank etc.
I am inclined to think that the problem lies in the timing but it has been checked and rechecked, redone a few times now - it's as if its' not advancing the timing.
Any thoughts will be appreciated!

Mk3 is not a simple thing to fix like a Citi.
