Tander, if this is the solution to your problem, I will change the topic later to: "Polo suspension droplinks" to assist search.

Re: Where to next?
You know what - that is an excellent idea.
Will update all tonight on this - see how it goes.
I think what Morne was referring to "play" is the movement of the droplinks while the rest of the suspension was not moving.

Re: Where to next?
Right then..
Got home and decided to just changed this thing now and see what happens.
jacked the car up, removed wheel and loosened the two bolts - however the bar would not come loose. So I put the wheel back on temp and lowered the car slightly - this made the bar just pop out with ease!
It didn't look worn but it was very loose.
Put new one on and put it all back together - anticipating the noise to still be there.
Went for a drive and NO MORE KNOCKING SOUND!!!
Morne you legend!
(Also thanks to all that helped here)
Took me 30 mins to change the bar. It is like a different car driving without that stupid knocking sound!
Marco - lets rename the topic - to help other guys out, too.

Re: Polo knocking noise suspension droplinks
Also to add:
I've noticed that these drop links are real buggers to get out of the strut... One way of getting them out more easily is to get someone to turn the cars' wheels so that the drop link just pops out. Might save someone out there some frustration

Re: Polo knocking noise suspension droplinks
Good tip there, Scatman. I didn't think of that at the time, lol.
Also - if you can use a socket rench - it makes it a lot easier as the bottom bolt is next to the plastic inner cover and makes it a pain in the ass to take out with a spanner.
I am just glad I have no more knocking sounds. And the guys at, Kwik fit, Supaquick and HiQ could not tell me this - Morne took two seconds to find the issue!

Re: Polo knocking noise suspension droplinks
It is the right bar and the right side had lots of play.
The rest of the car looked good and there was nothing on the bearings.
That is the most commmon.

Polo knocking noise suspension droplinks *DIY fix*
When you change these, jack up both sides of the car or else they are under massive tension. May as well change both sides at the same time too.

Well if you only have one jack - not easy to do that. But ask MeanTDi says - good point.Sinbad wrote:When you change these, jack up both sides of the car or else they are under massive tension. May as well change both sides at the same time too.

I bought axle stands to do this. Worthwhile investment for a couple hundred buckazoids.Tander wrote:Well if you only have one jack - not easy to do that. Re: Polo knocking noise suspension droplinks *DIY fix*
Rather replace both while you at it bud. I made the mistake of just replacing one (Left side) and issue was still there. Replaced right side and no more noise!
Try taking the bolts out of the con links (drop links) before jacking the car up - makes life easier this way. Also you can fit and remove them without taking the wheel off. And don't take the car all the way up - just enough to loosen the drop link from the two bolts. It pops off easy like this..
15 mins per side and you done!
