276 vs 272
howzit guys im busy looking for a cam for my velo 1.6 but wanted to know which one was better.i have heard guys saying that with the 272 the power kicks in from 1500 revs to about 5000revs and the 276 comes in at about 3000 and ends in 6500 or 7000.i think the 272 sounds better for my car as i took it for a dyno with just branches and exhaust and my car stops makin power after 5500.wouldnt the 276 be an over kill for my car, some advice would be highly appreciated

youyou are a newbie so i will just say this bro in all honesty have you tried using the search function or tried to do any kind of research of your own before posting here? Cam topics have honestly been discussed ateast 100 times by now so pretty much any question you have regarding cams is floating around the forum.

Re: 276 vs 272
I think we should hold back a little in telling people to use the search function. It doesnt always help, and besides, more than 90% of topics have been discussed, they are just recurring. If the search function was flawless, there would be less new topic since you can only have so many problems with a car which somewhere along the line have been discussed. im not targeting you young gun, its just that this is becoming a trend on the forum.
Current cars:

So you guys want to play? Bring it on!!!

Re: 276 vs 272
A 272 degree cam will be the best for the 1.6i motor. Nice low down torque and upper power gain. You see much gains without some headwork and chip.

Depends on a few important factors ,CALVIN1 wrote:howzit guys im busy looking for a cam for my velo 1.6 but wanted to know which one was better.i have heard guys saying that with the 272 the power kicks in from 1500 revs to about 5000revs and the 276 comes in at about 3000 and ends in 6500 or 7000.i think the 272 sounds better for my car as i took it for a dyno with just branches and exhaust and my car stops makin power after 5500.wouldnt the 276 be an over kill for my car, some advice would be highly appreciated
- during daily driving , at what altitude will you be ?
- How will you tune for the cam you choose ?
- Do you plan on future mods ??
- Whom will install the cam and how ?
You can go for either on the 1.6 , with the 276 being the upper limit off the selection . You would be on the borderline of about ok and too big with the 276 , that said - if all off the above is taken into consideration - it can be made to go pretty well.

Re: 276 vs 272
I'd say go with the 276, if you fit the 272 now you'll probably be wanting a bit more in a month or two (when you get used to the 272) and go for a 276 in any case.

Re: 276 vs 272
If you are going to do headwork or 2.0l in the future, go with a 276. Its not that difficult to drive if tuned properly. And the idle is
If not, 272 will do the job.
Either way, make sure you get the car tuned after fitting the cam.

Go big or go home I say. What would be the power difference between the two on the 1.6i motor I wonder

Re: 276 vs 272
i got a 276 in my caddy 1600 carb and i love it and pulls strong from 3000rpm till limiter. The cold idle is a bit hectic but once warmed up no problems.

Re: 276 vs 272
Cam choice comes down to what you want personally. I think 276 may be a bit peaky on a 1600 at altitude.
Vw used the 272 cam on the Citi R and that was an 1800 and it was tuned for everyday driving as well.
I have a 272 in my carbed 1600 caddy and I love it. The caddy does have a branch and freeflow as well. The power climbs nicely from 3000rpm and peaks at 6000rpm. The cold start is not really too much of an issue and the idle is almost exactly as i wanted. Since yours is FI tuning may be a bit tricky with MP9 but you will need to manipulate fueling and timing to accommodate the cam in order to extract the most out of the mod.
