I bet you dont know whats wrong with this ABF...FIXED
Howsit guys,
So this morning on my way to the office, the car jerked very badly for about 2 seconds or so 3 times! and then carried on normally as if nothing was wrong! It then jerked again and switched off, refusing to start! It was swinging fine, had enough fuel and fuel pressure was perfectly normal (as indicated by my Fuel pressure gauge)
I then removed the coil wire from the dizzy to check for spark... and nothing! Just 1 or 2 weak sparks every 5 seconds or so
I kept trying and it randomly started sparking like normal! I put the wire back and managed another 200 metres before the same thing happened again...
I finally made it to the office... and now I am stuck here, scared to make the drive home incase I get stuck on the road!
So what is the problem? Coil?
I phoned GW for a Coil, they dont have any stock! Not bad though for R390 for a Bremi Coil... Is it decent? Or is it not the coil?

A what? lol Its basically a standard MP9 setup... 3 pin coil
I know those Coils are famous for giving up, but the last time it happened to me.. and my friend... and brother... and other friend... the Coils would always be throwing a spark around where the coil wire fits onto... But now, it seems fine
I will get someone with a Golf to come test my coil later... any other ideas?

the 7 pin module is the Tci unit, your car does not have this as its built into the coil.
Could be the coil but normally they either work or dont work, check the plug going into the dizzy, make sure the pins are making good contact.

also have a similar problem with my mp9 coil
first my coil just died.
swapped it out for a second hand part a friend had lying around
for the most part it runs fine.. then once in a while it throws a few sparks close to the coil wire fitting.

Ok so here is the update... I'l try keep it simple, but I doubt anyone will know what the hell is going on here!
So yesterday I tried towing the car home, but the tow rope broke! So stuck in the middle of the road, I had no choice but to try and drive it... and guess what... it was PERFECTLY NORMAL! Full power right through the rev range, smooth as ever, no jerking, no backfiring, misfiring... nothing! Just awesome ABF power!
...for a whole 5km's I was happily driving along in 3rd gear and the engine just cuts out! But its still turning from the momentum of the car, but there is no power, so when you put your foot down, nothing happens, you just watch the speed and revs fall helplessly... and then suddenly... the motor bursts into life again, breaks into wheelspin and flies down the road happily again!
This happened over and over again all the way home, sometimes switching off completely, especially when stopping at a robot! Its like the ignition is being cut out completely, but intermittantly. Its not fuel related as I said before, my fuel pressure gauge in the engine bay reads normal fuel pressure. And I dont think its the alarm either, as its only a few months old and it disengages normally when you start the car.
For those of you who remember... When I had the 1.4i motor, I had the same problem and back then I didnt have this alarm, which further rules out alarm, it was random intermittant cutting out of power, I thought it was fuel pressure related and I said there was no spark and everyone tried helping and we couldnt figure it out! When it finally started it was after squeezing the return line, but the problem still never went away and we came to the conclusion that the 8v Fuel rail must be cracked... I even remember what Panic said... "How now brown cow... you said there was no spark" lol There was no spark when I checked...
He said check the Hall sender... relays... fuses etc etc
I dont think it is any of that, as how can the car perform perfectly normally if any thing like that is not working properly? I tried another coil off a friends working Golf and it did the same thing!
Someone explain this to me?!!!
I am going to try a VAG com diagnostics later, just waiting for FRC on that... any other ideas?

I am not sure which Dizzy it has... As I got the motor with the 4 window Dizzy as is... It does look like an OEM Dizzy though, as I have seen that GW 9a one and it doesnt look exactly like that.
Yes! The rev counter dies as well! But just for a second or so... and then the Oil pressure light also comes on and starts beeping... but again, only for a few seconds... and it did that on the 1.4 motor too!
I haver not tried starting it today... Im stuck at home lol... Will go check now...

Ok I tried starting it now... Ice cold... It started fine, idled for about 5 seconds and died. Tried again and nothing... just swinging... and beep beep from Oil light

I know I might be murdered for this, but here goes. Does your car have the two big fuses by the battery? Have you taken them out, cleaned them and stuck them back in? Spraying a little bit of electrical cleaner in the holder?

Is it the same ECU that you were using on the 1.4?. almost sounds like the ECU is shutting down. You have to test basically if the signal to the injectors is still active - (use a led for that). Also see if there is power over the injectors and coil.
Is there spark at that stage?
Really you have to start testing at one end and work your way through. Just guessing at stuff is no good.

why cause I installed a brand new one from Goldwagen and would start up normally run perfectly, rev and all and then 5 min dead as nails! pull the dizzy out turned it to chack for spark on the main Cord and very weak to no spark. Left it for a while and turned the dizzy strong spark again.
Swopped it out for a new one and never had an issue again since.
Sounds similar to your problem! So my money is on your DIzzy!

Yes it is the same ECU from the 1.4 motor... just has the FRC software loaded. I suspect its the ECU aswell, because its the only thing that was not changed in the conversion... new engine, new coil, new TB, and of course different dizzy...etc yet SAME problem. I will have to get a mechanic to help me test for all those things, thanks PM.
That Dizzy idea does sound worth a try though... I have a friend with an ABF on Management, he is not running wasted spark, so would I be able to test his dizzy on my car?

Yeah you have a lot of testing to do. Check for power everywhere. Also can you hear the fuel pump and idle motor with the ignition on?
You dont have to swap the dizzy to check it. Put the ignition on until the idle motor goes quiet, then crank the car for a second or 2. If you can now hear the idle motor the hall in the dizzy is working.

Any 16V Dizzy as long as it not the ABF one lol (lunch bar) Obvious!
I would have to disagree to a point with the hall sender test killer watt, my hall sender was still sending a signal to turn the idle motor but not enough for a strong or consistent spark.
You could even plug a 8v one on to test. Wat you do is when it does it again pull the 3 pin plug out the diz and plug it into another dizzy (8v/16v) just turn the dizzy with your fingers and it should spark through the main cord as usual. dont even need a dizzy cap/ rotor on! It just for the hall sender pick up test. Plug it back into your 16v diz and check for same thing. You can pull your 16v dizzy out and test it the same way. It helps instead of having someone swing your motor while u checking spark.
Like I said mine gave me sh1t out the box. I hadn't even taken the car 100m and she was broken!

On mp9 only the ecu reads the hall sender. The ecu then tells the coil and idle motor what to do. So its not possible that the ecu got enough signal for the idle motor and not the coil. It will either get signal or not.
