Help needed: Citigolf cuts off while driving

Post by Rocco »

Hi Guys,

need urgent help on this.. once again

recently (after the heavy rains in kzn & jhb  ) my citi 1.4i while driving switches off,
after a little while it starts again, drove up to jhb fine & then started its nonsense
but noticed the sound below the petrol tank was no londer there so i assumed
it was the fuel pump  luckily i had someone check it out & it was the fuel pump relay that packed up, got it replaced, (part from VW) & worked fine...
in addition to all of this, i have checked the coil, plug leads, distributor etc & seems to be ok

now the problem is... while driving & nearing a robot or stop street when i slow down & drop gear to 2nd with my foot down on the clutch & leg off the accelerator it switches off with only the battery light on... try starting & it starts on the turn...

what could be the problem with my car??
can i hook the car up on the computer & will it pick up any faults rather than checking everything again?
who can help with this?

appreciate the feedback as it is rather annoying while driving & not know when it will switch off

Just a suggestion,
if you slowing down means you on the brakes.
I had the same problem, everytime i went on the brake the car would switch off.
Found out there was water on the tail lights.
Drained the water out and sealed the unit properly, no prblems thereafter.

@ boosted, i will have to check the coil as soon as it does this again
@ Ripdbod, i do press the brake when slowing down but i dont think thats the problem
cos the rev drops below normal mark & goes back to normal but sometimes drops which then switches off

Try realigning the throttle body.

Yeah next time it cuts out get out and feel your coil if its seriously hot then that could be your problem!

As far as re aligning your throttle body you have to use vag.com if I'm not mistaken. I know there is a procedure that you can do which involves unplugging the ECU and what not but I forget what the procedure is. But that's if you can't get on to a vagcom!

Maybe it's caused by a airlock in the fuel system or your brake booster is leaking or coil.

I dont know much about a citi.com but could it not be the TCI unit that is packing up?
Is the TCI unit part of the coil on these cars?

If you still have the faulty relay, open it up and check if it's rusty inside.

If the relay is contaminated I can bet you that either your windscreen or rain tray is leaking on the drivers side.

Cheers,

Jean

Hi, i am having the exact problem with my golfy 1.4i. I see the rev going below 1 when applying brakes together with clutch and sometimes it switches off. I noticed it starts doing this once its warm. When cold it drives well. Please advise how did you get yours fixed because some machanics want to strip my engine something i dnt want. Infact they want me to be convinced its a big problem so that they charge me much

Hi guys I'm having the same problem with my 1.4i. I have tried numerous things. TB is shinny clean, tried another MAF sensor, replaced vacuum valve, tried another purge valve same problem, there is no blockages from the air box to the intake, air is flowing perfectly. Car timming is set to the T even tried another fuel rail but never helped The one thing that does stop this from happening is removing the small vacuum pipe coming from the vacuum valve to the small nipple thing at the end of the fuel rail. Been driving the car with the pipe off for a week n it doesn't cut off. Have spoken to may guy n everyone is baffled with this. What could be the issue???

By undoing the pipe you are allowing air past the throttle body which helps it idle.
This same question gets asked and answered a 100 times a week. It's the most common issue on mp9 and basically what it comes down to is that the motor that does the idle is busy failing. Generally means new throttle body.

Hey guys,

I'm having the same problem on my golf too now, except mine is an 05 Chico 1.4 carb and not an EFI model. I noticed the problem a few days ago and had to replace my fuel lines from the main outlet and return from the tank to the motor after i got stuck at a robot (output from the tank was torn open). I had water in my tail lights too so i drained them as well (after reading this post when the problem started). The coil, spark leads, plugs as well as the carburetor are all new (replaced them around 4 months back). The motor dies in 2nd or 3rd gear (so far) when I apply brakes with clutch in or even if i put it into neutral and apply brakes while coasting as well as at startup in neutral it will swing and then drop to around 300rpm and cut out.

What could the issues still be and what can I do to solve it?

Thanx in advance

Hi everyone. I am currently driving a 1990 Fox 1.8. Recently I encountered an issue where as I slow down and put my foot on the clutch the engine cuts out. The battery light and oil light both flash. Battery is in good condition and there is sufficient oil. When I turn car on it cuts out immediately unless I keep car revving. I drive in heavy traffic daily and this problem is worrying. Could it be a fuel pump issue? If so where is it located?

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Possibly diapraghm failure on the fuel pressure regulator. so it pisses raw fuel into the intake. alternatively could be a breaking fuel rail.

Fuel pump should be underneath your RR door, just before your rear wheel arch.
