Got around to do the front
Manual says you need to undue steering tie rod, Anti-roll bar mount and brake caliper, but I got old strut out ok without doing that...the nuts on the tie rod and anti-roll bar were to tight for me to get them out. Hope it does not affect something else somewhere
Anyway, strut out! Spring compressors were cheap so glad they worked!

Image

Strut has a weird split nut thing which I had no idea how to remove, but some thin nose pliers got it off (and back on)

Image

New shock, cleaned up spring and new bump stops... looks better!

Image

----

Looking into left wheelwelll - autobox leaking something rather badly, and brake lines not secured!

Image

Also discovered central locking is cut to pieces

Image

And on changing battery, see some great corrosion happening there under...

Image

And car has no dim beams!! ARGH! what a lemon of a car!

Gets better and better :bang:

Hey man, this car has me interested, I think its a lovely car to practise your automotive skills on, and you get to learn how the systems on the car work first-hand!

The central locking, are all the doors operated by the vacuum pump in the boot, or is there another mechanism for the passenger doors maybe? The reason I ask is that my friend's boot and drivers door can lock/unlock using the remote, but not the rest. How does this particular system work?

Great job on the shocks man, I know it's not a fun job.

Keep up the great work, sand out all that rust by the battery, and prime it with an anti-rust/corrosion primer, and finish it off with a few coats of black paint

Looks the same as mine, all the doors are operated by the vacuum pump in the boot. My central locking system still works but now recently its starting to jam or get stuck.

Previously when it was jamming, while driving you could hear it working, and once it was parked off, you can still hear it was working. Bad thing about it is that the next morning the battery was flat because of the pump working overnight.

All I did was disconnect the pump completely and reconnect it again and it was working fine....

Yup, quite enjoying working on it - although I have a shortage of tools...

You'd think the guy would just pull out the plug rather than cut the wires on the central locking
Will take doors apart over weekend to see if I can get the central locking going again. Door handles are very sticky, so hopefully it's obvious what's wrong with them.

Will sand and prime battery bay too.

The thing that is bugging me is the autobox. Think I should get a VW expert for take a look and see what is leaking. Don't want to have to find a replacement autobox. Wonder if a Mk3 autobox would bolt on if push came to shove

The things people do, but it doesn't look that bad, you can rewire it back. The casing where the pump goes in, does water leak through it because mines is starting to do that :bang:

I've got a bunch or water leaking into the back, will have to try track it down. The foam casing is looking rather weather beaten...
Anyone know a good way of tracking down water leaks?

are the lights the only likely place water would get in? Got one light with broken trim at the top, so thinking that would be a likely suspect. Guess a change in rear lights is on the cards.

The lights and probably the seals/rubbering on the boot. I saw you got rust around the boot lock area

I know mags need a major cleanup - Anyone know where I can get the centre caps?? :hi:

Will have to change the power steering bottle as soon as I can work out which fluid to use. Anyone know???
Image

Wiring is a REAL mess. there are leads going nowwhere, cut wires and loose tape all over the place.

son-of-a-****!
After taking the above pics, zee **** will not start :bang: :bang: :bang:
Starter motor is not turning. Can't seem to hear the click of the solonoid either
What are the possibilities?
* Starter itself (spose I can test if current getitng there with a multi meter)
* Immobilizer (no idea how to test that
* gear shift start preventer or whatever its called that stops motor starting in anything other than Park or Neutral (again, no idea how to test this)
* ignition switch (head lights cutting on on attempted start, so I'm guessing it's working ok?

Gonna rename her the **** lemon at this rate...

Hey man, I think your starter is probably running from a relay somewhere like my friends' car. Check where the wired go to from the starter, you should see it going either to a relay, or the battery. Try that, maybe it will work?

If you stand in front of the car the starter is behind the radiator on the gearbox side of the engine. Trace the thick cable coming from the battery, it goes to the starter.

Will have another look. I must be blind...
Would starter for an auto be any different to that of a manual?

I've never had an auto but I don't think so, it's got a flange on the motor as well

If I can recall, the starter on an autobox is somewhere below the exhast manifold.

Also, try and put the automatic selector to Neutral when starting to ensure that it is not some on the selctor causing problems.

Would explain why I can't find it...

Yup, have tried moving it about - it may well be a faulty protector switch causing the issue. My first test was going to be seeing if any power is reaching the starter...but tracking the bugger down has been unsuccessful thus far. Does not bode well!

Well throught I might as well start with the 'easy' stuff.

Dicided to try and jump the gear selection switch because it looks like this inside.
Image

Jumped it with some copper wire...hopefully the right pins.
Image

Still nada :bang:
Both these lights stay on continuosly, but I have a feeling they have long since been bypassed
Image

Gear selector was glued on

Image

Not sure how it's supposed to be secured, looks like a screw, but no hole in the shaft...

yeah, cleaned then up quite a bit by leaving overnight in water to loosen the clay a bit, then clamped then outside and let loose with a hosepipe. But still a lot stuck in the bit that swings against the pin. still very sluggish...
Probably easier just to buy a set of Citi locks and replace.

Probably, but its not as much fun, and there's a lot less learning and love going into it then
