Re: Belix's Jetta 2 - How to replace the alternator belt???

Post by cli 16v »

Dude post a picture of the engine bay if you can. I will look tonight at the picture and my MK2 and advise. My alternator belt is a V belt but and no other belts as mine is a 1.6 carb HM motor code.

Anyone got a link the door handle mod? All four doors are near impossible to open - need to push doors in, use knee to push in too, and then squeeze and if the stars are correctly aligned, the door opens. Not great for me old mam with arthritis in her hands.

Post by Belix »

Had car over 6 years now...
Still need to get door handles sorted out...
Somewhere in her travels, someone took a liking to the grill and removed it...was only noticed later on...

Image

Where does one find a replacement grill???

Seems like the grill was keeping the headlight in place, cause it now wobbles around. on closer inspection, one of the supports for the headlight is missing, but I doubt I can get them indiviually, would liekly need a whole replacement headlight....

front grille you can buy new. Agent uysed to sell the headlight clips loose - possibly easier to buy a new headlight - strip clips of you want to keep OE headlight or just keep it as a spare
hers a place that has grille and headlights

I actually still have the grill from my ex mk2 sitting at my parents place in Pretoria. Needs a badge and metal strip but it's free if you go and pick it up

See boss auto stocks rep parts, but looks like i'd need to buy both.
http://www.bossautospares.co.za/jetta2- ... d-lamp-set.
They mention only for facelift version - how do I tell whether the old girl is the facelift version of not?

thanks iLy, appreciate the offer, will make a plan to collect it!!

Nope all 85-92 Jettas used the same lights, only the 91-92 CLI models had the narrow Chinese Eye Rallye lamps

As far as possible see if you can fix your OG Hella units, they are waaaay better than the cheapie replacements, unless you can still find the Depo brand of aftermarket parts

I bought 3 sets of lights to make up one usable set when I had the Jetta front on my current Golf

I've seen I can get the clips and screws on eBay, but pretty pricey. Wonder how close to original the reps are, if I could use the screws and stuff from them, might be a solution.

Help, car is stuck in a parking lot, it cannot select a gear. Anyone point me in the direction of how the gear selection cable works??

Re: Belix's Jetta 2 - Gear Selector cable snapped

Post by Belix »

Traced cable form gear selector to gearbox and managed with some great difficulty to push the selector out of park. Unfortunately, I could then not pull it back two notches meaning the car was driven back 20 odd km in 1st. Was a long and dull drive with a careful eye on the temperature.
So car is back home at least.
The difficulty in moving the lever on the gearbox is concerning, and the cause of the cable snap I am thinking. I have no idea what would cause the selector to become hard to move, but I can't find much info on it. Think this is a job for Morne...if he's interested that is.

Best idea is to just take the mk2 to Morne... And let him find all the major issues. Then pepper your angus for the bill.

Re: Belix's Jetta 2 - Gear Selector cable snapped

Got a few goodies from GW including the all important selector cable for the autobox.
Image

Getting a replacement headlight turned out to be easier than trying to source the headlight clips, and it was a repo anyway, so no big loss.
There is still some movement in the headlight however, as one of the screws that hold the headlight to the body is missing, AND two of the screws that hols the headlight cradle to the body is also missing. Took on from the passenger side temporarily just to get some kind of stability, but will need to get some

Image

Managed to get the lever on the 'box into drive so at least the drive out to Morne was not too bad, altough the car did really not like the 1hr crawl along in traffic, with the oil light blinking on a few times for some reason.

Hope Morne can sort out:
- replace shifter cable (LOT easier with a lift)
- difficult to open driver door (well they are all hard to open, but the driver's door is the most important obviously)
- clunky CV joint
- Engine and gearbox oil leak

After that we'll see what else he has time to look at.

Re: Belix's Jetta 2 - Oil light and warning tone

Post by Belix »

Need to fix the images in this topic
#photobucketsucksballs

After the last service, the oil light is occasionally coming on with the warning tone. Checking the oil each time has shown no issue with oil level. Is there a way to check that the oil pump is still ok? What else could it be? Faulty pressure sensor? something blocking the oil pickup?

Also, the driver door window winder has given up. It was a rep part, but I am struggling to find another. I keep finding the one for the earlier year model with the quarter window.

You need to use a mechanical pressure gauge to test pressure.

Thanks Panic. I would assume it would be something a decent mechanic would have? I could buy one, but R400 for one test seems a bit wasteful.

Belix's Jetta 2 - Oil light and warning tone

Post by Belix »

Shame this car
Morne took off the sump and found quite a bit of muck on the pickup. Since then the car has not had the buzzer and oil light, however, it has been leaking oil. I asked the parental if she was checking the oil level and she said affirmative.
Lately car hard to start and oil light coming on again. Oil level fine said the parental.
I go check. No oil. Dry as a bone. Not even a trace on the dip stick.
Not sure if it all vanished between the last check and now or what, but I suspect it's been driven with very low oil. It's got a nice tick tick tick now.
Will take it in to be looked...Morne in Canada so will have to find another mech.
And in other news, someone reversed into a rear door at the local spar while we drove past them...

Dropped car with mech...diagnosis is shot bearings. Car only has 200Kkm, but anyway, it is what it is. Let's see what the quote comes back as...

Get some centre-caps for those rims if you can - not the original, but the small black ones that cover the hub. I did it soon after getting mine back in the day - it looks "naked" without some cap. ;)

Yeah, the caps were missing on one side, did not notice that someone removed the other side now too.

Took the car to Technimech, who was good enough to quote. Unfortunately, the quote was to rebuild the engine completely, and came to R33K. Would love to do that, but not an option for the price, especially given the age and condition of the car.

In the meantime, the car has started pissing oil somewhere near the oil filter. To much mess to see what or where.

Morne was good enough to recommend someone, so I'll take the car through to German Auto Salon in Florida and see what they say.
Incidentally Morne mentioned the "intermediate shaft inner bearing" when he last saw the car, and said it's possible to change it without removing the engine.
Will have to wait and see.

Cannot change an intermediate shaft bearing with the engine in place. They come undersized and have to be line bored.
