Hi guys,

been having hassels with my carb.....the stud that is in the carb where the Airbox is, the thread on the carb is stripped away....I have tried to use Pratley steel to keep the stud in place but it only holds it for one day the breaks loose again....does anyone have any other suggestions ???

Yup. Dump the carb and put on fuel injection. Or get a new carb. Never been able to successfully permanently fix one once it broke out there. You can try to tap it slightly bigger but that is normally only a temp fix and not enough meat to do it properly.

hey panic,

thanks. this is only for a temp fix as im busy with the other motor and that spare carb is ok its not stripped at all......should I just change the carb and put the spare one I have on the car until the new motor is ready...?? the carb comes off a 1.8 motor will that be a problem...

The cabs are essentially all the same. Even the basic jetting is actually the same.

Be careful though.

As unlikely as it sounds, I've had that stud come out completely, went through the intake manifold, and it wedged itself in an intake valve on my old 1300 Golf.

Not expensive to fix, but quite an unnecessary mission.

My very first Jetta CSX did that.. Thank goodness it was under warrentee as they replaced the carb the head and a piston...

I was lucky. Mine was a non-interference motor, so I simply whipped the head off, pulled the stud out from under the valve, and stuck the head back on.

So mine was only the cost of a head gasket, but it was a fair amount of work, obviously.

mine did that as well. I put a cold air induction kit on from GW.

thanks alot bluebob, i have made sure that the nut is on the airbox nice and tight

Joggie how is the Jetta 2 Going ?

@4epikanini i tried that option of the induction but i felt the car was much heavier on petrol than the original airbox.....any comments on that....how is your consumption with the induction...

guys any comments on the induction kits for the carb is it worth it or just a waste of time ?

on my golf, when it was carb this happened to me as well, but lots of damage, bolt ended up in no.4 cylinder, squashed the piston against the rings and damaged the cumbustion chamber as well.

Also is the front mounting bolt fixed onto that bracket that fits on the tappet cover, this will put less strain on the carb mounting bolt, we used a heli coil insert and sorted mines after doing the engine and never had a issue with it loosening again.

I tapped mine 6 months ago. It's still holding.

I'm also wondering about the induction kit and fuel consumption.

I don't mind at all. I thought maybe for a second you bought my car as I immediately spotted the cable tie that help my cruise control cable stay in place

I found some more of my carb pics for your reference

1 - choke cable
2 - cruise control cable ( the crew next to it is the cold start adjustment not the idle adjustment - it must not touch the plate by a breath )
3 - throttle cable
4 - A/C rpm kick up diaphram - the diaphram is fed by a vacuum hose #6 coming from a vacuum solenoid on the other side of the carb
5 - A/C rpm kick up diaphram adjustment screw

the hose connected to the T-piece is fed from the front of the carb to the actuator on the side which operates the second stage mechanism.

my T-piee was an addition hooked up to a vacuum gauge.
