Golf Mk1 1.4i suddenly stopped idling -SORTED! check below for solution

Post by buttle »

So the car has been running very well for a long time now but 2 days ago when I started up in the morning it briefly revved very high and then died. It starts easily enough but just will not idle at all - even when the engine warms up. It revs perfectly well and drives normally with the throttle but just will not idle.

I have previously had an issue with the cold start sensor so I installed a new one but still no idling whatsoever.

1. Is there any electrical device or circuit (like the cold start sensor) that controls the idle speed?
2. Is there any way to check that the correct voltage or signal is running to the cold start sensor?
3. Is there a mechanical adjustment screw somewhere to set idle speed?

The thing is... one day it worked perfectly and the next time: completely dead (the idle, that is)

so I did some googling and most of the results returned me to THIS board

I removed the entire throttle body (only 1 connector and 4 cap screws) taking care of the GASKET
cleaned the thing in 2 cups of diesel coz i did not have contact or carb cleaner
cleaned inside well (no more black build up AT ALL) and outside
wiped everything off with a cleanish rag
installed the connector
installed the throttle body with the 4 cap screws (take care NOT to overtighten)
and it FIRED UP first kick and PURRED LIKE A PANTHER!!!

I **** LOVE THIS GROUP

Thanks in advance
