Golf 7 GTi taking water

Post by ashgtir82 »

Hi Guys,

Need some advice. I have a 2016 golf 7 gti. it started taking coolant which is now getting progressively worse as the days weeks go by. I top it up every morning by about 5 to 10mils or so.
the Waterpump was changed by bosch about 2 years ago and since then I barely did 15000km on the car. I did contact bosch and they say the 1yr guarantee is over. I remember him quoting me on an original vw unit with a thermostat and charging me around 15k for the job.
Anyways I have taken the car to vw in durbs and they checked it out and said the water pump has a slight leak and the pump is aftermarket not original. I contacted bosch again and they changed their story to say they put an aftermarket equivalent.

So my question is VW has been known to false diagnose. I have experience with them in this regard. Are there any good vw specialists I can take the car to.

thanks.

If the coolant is leaking, you should see some whiteish residue where there is a leak, in this case, it should be on or starting at the water pump

I'm interested to hear whether the thermostat is also an aftermarket product. From what I've read, the aftermarket water pumps are supposedly of better quality that the OEM so should theoretically last longer?

Let us know what the eventual diagnosis is.

Hi Reegz,

Both the Water Pump and Thermostat is aftermarket. The workshop I had taken the car to did a pressure test on the system to rule out any leaks with pipes etc. they also checked out the radiator to make sure we not losing water there as well. The car is booked in for next week early to strip and inspect the water pump and thermostat. the techie at the workshop did say that 90% of all GTi's they have done 6 or 7 when losing water turned out to be the water pump.

Thanks.

I've been glued to the DAP YouTube channel for some time now. Wealth of information on common issues and fixes etc.

Here's one on the Mk7 thermostat & waterpump issue:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIVyvfE ... eAutoParts

Not that I'd (currently) do the job myself, but it's good to understand what's involved so that we as owners are more knowledgeable when getting diagnoses from various shops. Helps sift out the real from the fake.

Obviously, watching videos is not a replacement for real, hands-on experience. But this is the internet age ;-)
