Hi guys,
I’ve got a Mk1 Carb that has been acting up recently.
Basically, the car would start but then fail to maintain idle. On days when it does start, it will drive then randomly cut off, as if there’s no fuel or something ..
Normally, it would take a 5-15 mins for it to restart again. I’ve changed everything from the Petrol pump, to the fuel separator as well as had my carb cleaned out!
I’ve had one guy tell me that I should change the Base plate..
I would greatly appreciate your help guy

Re: Mk1 Carb won’t idle/ cuts off.
If it dies whilst driving, it could be ignition related and not fuel related.
I had something similar on my citi golf, and it was the accelerator pump on the carb, little plunger on the side of the carb with a diaphragm about the size of a R2 coin. Keihin carb.
Don't know what variation of the mk1 golf you may have, as they had varying types of ignition and carb systems over the years...

Random cutting off and long starts could also be related to the hall sender on the distributor.

When the car is idling, spray carb cleaner at base plate, if the idle picks up then the base plate is cracked and sucking air

Re: Mk1 Carb won’t idle/ cuts off.
Possible Bad earth between carb and valve cover.
Fuel cut off solenoid engaged.
Should be a +/-15cm wire with ring terminal, goes to one of the M6 studs holding tappet/valve cover.

Re: Mk1 Carb won’t idle/ cuts off.
Goldwagen or major spares shops should have rebuild kits, if it is the stock Keihin carb. I had mine rebuilt by a carb specialist back then. Don't think there are too many of those around anymore...DONBALO10 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 8:21 amamstel18 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 6:58 am If it dies whilst driving, it could be ignition related and not fuel related.

Re: Mk1 Carb won’t idle/ cuts off.
Before you go replacing all sorts of stuff, you should determine whether the problem lies in the fuel supply or the ignition circuit.
For example, when the engine won't start, take out a spark plug and see whether it is wet with fuel. And while it is removed, test for a spark (if you know how to do this). And if there is a transparent in-line fuel filter, check whether there is fuel inside or whether it is dry.
