2.0tfsi vacuum pump cover plate seal leaking

Post by kingr »

Hello,

Does anyone have advice regarding where I can source the vacuum cover plate seal/o-ring locally?

This is the cover and the red circle indicates where my cover is leaking oil.

Image

VW & GW doesn’t sell this seal as a single part and only sell the entire vacuum unit. The vac unit from VW is R9k and R2.3k from GW.

I have found a company in the US called RkxTech that sell the seal kit alone for $29 https://www.rkxtech.com/products/rkx-au ... 4-q5-a5-a6

There site also indicates that this same seal is used on the 1.8t.

I don’t want to replace a working vac pump because of a busted seal, any advice to source this part appreciated.

Here’s the aftermath of this leak.

Yes, it’s for my mk5 bwa.

Tx bud, I will mail him. The car is anyway due for the vvt timing chain replacement with him maybe this can be fixed then.

Hopefully I can source the part before taking the car to him & diy it. I don’t want the leak to continue if it’s a simple fix.

No problem buddy. If I look at it it doesn't seem very difficult to diy it but maybe just double check. U know sometimes things look easy but when u half way into it, u think man was I wrong I shouldn't haven't started this 🤣 happened to me many times
But good luck let me know how it goes and if u do diy it let me know how difficult it is so if I do have the issue again I know what to do

Yosh doesn't sell a repair kit.

GW Delary quoted me R2050 for the complete vacuum unit with club member discount, I'm ordering a unit from them today. I will update with pics once installed.

I took it apart and notice one of the o ring was perished. Took sample of o ring to the spare shop.

I had the same idea, I guess could try my local hydraulic shop. I'm in Kimberley, my options with a variety of spares are limited here.

That's strange. If I remember correctly he did repair mine. Il look for my old invoice later this afternoon and see if he repaired or replaced it. Maybe I am being mistaken

I just removed the seal/o-ring. It’s brittle and busted. This is definitely my leak. I will try the rest of the week to source this seal before committing to a vacuum pump.

What makes this a non-standard shape is this little hump.

Did you replace the same seal and did you replace it a normal circle seal?

Hi. Just my 2c comment I think u can put in a normal o-ring but make sure the thickness and diameter is the same or just a little thicker than the oem 1 and it should take the shape on that little flat spot without an issue. But lets see if any1 else comments otherwise

I couldn’t resist a diy attempt and sealed it up with LiquiMoly Sealant. I basically put smeared sealant into the groove where the oem seal must seat. I will let this stand overnight and test it tomorrow.

I then torqued the bolts 10nm in a start pattern. This is just a try, I have nothing to loose.

I will appreciate a part no.

So far it’s not leaking with temps reaching 95 degrees Celsius.

I found it hard to believe that Yosh didn’t have a answer to replace the seal.

i did some research when mine was leaking and found that this o-ring/seal is the culprit.
found the part number( as above) and bought it from VW and had Yosh change it when he was doing some other maintenance work on my car.
the o -ring i purchased was perfectly round though no hump etc. as can be seen on ECS website as well.

Tx bud.

My cousin who is a VW Mech advised that vw upgraded the vac pump on later models. Maybe you had the upgraded pump with round seal. I cant see how that seal will work on my car. He also said the dont sell the seal with the hump.

So far no oil leak after reaching 120c with some spirited driving.

I will keep my eyes on this over the next couple of weeks & if no oil leaks I’m going to mark this as “fixed”. If it leaks, then I buy the GW pump.
