Whining noise

Post by Jrmunger199 »

What’s up guys, so yesterday it started, with this god awful whining noise, sounds almost as if it’s coming from the left front side, only happens coming into boost at around 3000rpm, and then stays all the way up in the Rev range, and quite’s down closer to Rev limit, and disappears when not in boost.

Below is a link as to what it sounds like, but a constant whine from 3000 to around 6000rpm or so.

https://youtu.be/jr-vo9yGOG8

If anybody has had this or might know what to look any help will be appreciated. It’s a mk4 gti, 1.8t.

First remove the auxillary belt (Alternator, AC belt) and drive for a short while and check if it still whines. Remember not for long as your battery won't be charging.

Does it whine when stationary? Then unplug one of the intercooler lines and check if the sound gets louder, then it is the turbo. If the whine doesn't get louder then its most likely the cambelt rollers/tensioner or something else.

It could also be a boost leak, check if any of the pipes have an oil stain or get someone to try and locate the sound while you rev the car.

If it is only in boost, it may be a simple thing like a boost leak or a big thing like the turbo saying goodbye.

I doubt it will be a belt or tensioner.

Just checked all the piping as best I could, doesn’t seem to be that, so will have to take the turbo out in the next few days, but still boosting fine etc, which guides me to think it’s possible one of the exhaust impella fins have possibly broken off

It doesn’t whine when stationary or idling, only pretty much going into boost, I’ll do what you said here and let you know the outcome, I’ve already checked the pressure side from the intercooler, to turbo, and all clamps etc are tight

I haven’t yet, I bought a new turbo but haven’t managed to fit it yet, somebody reversed into me today and broke the radiator, so need to fix the damages first, but will update the thread when I find the problem

Shaft must had been quite wobbly for those bent fins!

Luckily you caught it on time otherwise you would have some more serious damage. Whats the mileage on the turbo?

Good find there before the Turbo self destruct.
Curious as well, how many kilos your turbo covered and btw what car is this?
