Hello!!!
I have decided to drain the oil in my gearbox, hasnt been done since i bought the car 2 years ago, have been procrastinating all this time and fear that something really bad might happen if i dont act now. Its a 02J box and wondering what you guys use ? The service manual explicitly says we should use a Fully Synthetic 75W90 GL4 and i'm having trouble finding it, many sales people tell me it doesn't matter if i use any gear oil, nothing will get affected, also whats your take on this?

Re: Golf 4 GTi manual transmission: Which Oil do you use?
I used to use Castrol Syntrans Transaxle [Edit: in earlier generation 020 gearboxes], which has exactly those specs. If my memory serves me correctly, it is no longer available. But there is also a Castrol "BOT" type oil that can work. Stephan (Panic Mechanic) has listed it here previously. I speak under correction, but I THINK it was BOT 130M, which is used by Ford, but has the same viscosity and API-GL specs.
[Edit: looking through old threads, BOT 402 and BOT 130M look as though they would both work. But I hope someone can confirm this.]

When a car tailgates me, i slow down - then floor it and give them a cloud of diesel smoke to choke on
