A cautionary tale of getting a downpipe just made anywhere

Post by panic-mechanic »

SO this is not a name and shame excercise as for a start I have not asked and really don't even want to know.
But let me just tell you what I want to say. Beware of where you go to have a car decatted or to have a downpipe made.
Ask for references - look at some other cars and for heavens sake take a look at what was done before paying and leaving with the car.
I got this Golf7 R in during the week with a noise from under the car.
Long and short is x place did a cat delete/ downpipe. The first attempt rubbed the drive shaft.
They then had the drive shaft fixed.
Attempt two - whomever did the driveshaft install did not tighten the bolts on the coupler and two of them fell out. Result is one stuffed drive shaft and probably the worst ever ugliest exhaust build I have seen in my life for real. I have only seen worse examples in funny memes.

And people still say, "Oh, I can get a downpipe for my R600k car made for R500 why pay the money charged by a fabricator?"

How do you even hand a customer his car back like that?

Also true that you get what you pay for. Cheap often means expensive further down the line.

That's just wrong, and to do that work on a Golf 7R. You must have no quality standard to sleep at night after doing this.

That is scary, It's a must to have a look at the work done while the car is still on the ramp before leaving. And on a G7R ...ouch!

Yes indeed - should be between the motor and the mount of the exhaust rear section. Where it is there it does absolutely jack and he shouldn't have bothered.

I don't know that specific set-up, but I'm trying to understand something in the first pic. If it's a dof question, you're welcome to laugh. So here goes...

How was the downpipe actually attached to the manifold / turbo outlet? I don't see any bolts, nuts, clamps or other fasteners where Mr X applied his Tippex.

lol

There is probably a v band in there somewhere... I initially thought they welded the downpipe straight to the turbo

Downpipe is attached to the turbo with a v-band clamp. The original downpipe very first piece was cut off and then welded onto this atrocity.

looks like a job from the guys on the side of the road with their ramps and tanks.

Can't help but think that this is not healthy for performance, probably slower now than a factory stock 7R
